Storyhunter Staff Picks of the Month: May 2018
Come watch our new selection of Staff Picks! Each month, the Storyhunter staff chooses three videos produced through the platform out of the dozens we watch during our weekly Storytime. From a miniatures artist in Malaysia to a supermom of eight pursuing her college degree, these are our favorite videos from May:
Memory in Miniature
Atlas Obscura
Storyhunter Documentary Shooter: Lucas V.
Atlas Obscura produced this short doc on Malaysian artist, Pui Wan, who crafts miniature replicas of the old buildings and communities in Kuala Lumpur that are being demolished to make way for new construction. Through her miniatures, she is trying to preserve the memories and history of the city as it changes and develops. Atlas Obscura, which produces surprising stories from around the world, commissioned this video from documentary filmmaker Lucas V.
Straight Outta the Bronx: A Cambodian Rickshaw Driver
OZY
Storyhunter Video Journalist: Jodi H.
Journalist Jodi H. pitched this story about a deported Cambodian rickshaw driver to OZY on the Storyhunter platform. With a Bronx accent, rickshaw driver Luka Meas tells how he immigrated to New York as a young teenager, only to be deported thirty years later to a Cambodia he no longer recognized after serving time for a drug conviction. OZY commissioned this story for their “True Stories” section to give viewers’ a glimpse into the everyday lives of people around the world.
Online courses allow this supermom of eight to pursue her passion of helping others
KMBC9 with Kansas State University
Storyhunter Documentary Shooter: Chris R.
Hearst Television’s KMBC9 needed to shoot this mini-doc on a Kansas State University student living in Illinois. They commissioned filmmaker Chris R. to cover the story about the mom of eight, who is taking KSU courses online to pursue a degree in dietetics and nutrition health. Hearst gave Chris a great review, saying he “really understood what we were trying to do with this project! He’s a very solid communicator and shooter.”
