Storyhunter Staff Picks of the Month: November 2017
It’s almost time for our annual Storyhunter Staff Picks Awards, but we still have this month’s winners to highlight! For those who don’t already know, our Staff Picks come from Storytime — a tradition at the Storyhunter office, where we get together each Friday to watch videos produced through our platform. From a look at the last free place in America to a new podcast series, these are our November favorites:
This is the last free place in America
VT by Jungle Creations
Storyhunter Video Journalist: Maya C.*
Jungle Creations runs VT, one of the most popular digital media pages on Facebook. Recently, they posted an assignment on Storyhunter, looking for video journalists near the Sonoran Desert in California. They hired San Francisco-based journalist, Maya, to travel to Slab City and shoot a short documentary on the people wholive there and why they’re attracted to the lawless land. The video was a huge success on Facebook, receiving over 13 million views since it was published.
Living with Lions
Earther
Storyhunter Documentary Shooter: Nani W.
Gizmodo’s new site, Earther, needed stories about how environmental issues are impacting the world, so they posted a call for pitches on the platform. Nani sent them her short doc on how conservationists are trying to mitigate the conflict between humans and lions in Kenya. With drought and urbanization bringing them into closer contact, this is a pressing issue for local communities and herders.
