Storytelling, whether real or imagined, is an art form as well as a craft. I'm an award-winning screenwriter, film director, journalist, and architect, but when people ask me what I do, I tell them I'm a storyteller. I have been working alongside, and increasingly, leading creative teams in the development and production of award-winning film, journalism and architecture projects for over 11 years. Most recently I was named a Finalist in the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Screenplay Competition for my short film, Rich Like Julio Lobo. I have worked with major global news organizations like Gizmodo, Global Citizen, Univision, VOA ( Voice of America), Circa News, and Al Jazeera to provide groundbreaking news coverage of the devastation caused by Hurricane María on the island of Puerto Rico. My academic background includes Master’s level studies in Architecture at Washington University of St. Louis, one of the top 10 programs in the nation, and Bachelor studies in History at Tufts University in Boston. I have ridden my bicycle across America (twice), creating videos to promote bicycle travel, and have created a 10-episode web series using nothing but stock media. I am an Iranian, award winning editor/ assistant editor with over seven years of experience in various projects such as documentaries, mockumentaries, narratives, promotionals, and music videos. I recently worked on a Shondaland/Netflix show called Inventing Anna as a post assistant where I managed processing dailies, script syncing, temporary sound design, editorial paperwork, and deliverables. Previously, I worked for over three years as a video editor for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University where I gained significant experience in all aspects of post-production including editing, effects, color correction, sound mixing, and spotting. I also worked for three years at the Scottsdale School of Film+Theatre as a post-production lab technician, tutoring students in Avid Media Composer and other editing platforms such as Premiere Pro and After Effects. Additionally, I am an Avid Certified Professional in Media Composer and have strong creative and organizational skills along with the ability to communicate and work well both independently and in a group. I consider media the most powerful tool to create stories that challenge the imagination and accepted perceptions. Being a part of a persecuted religious minority, I was deprived of the opportunity to receive formal training and higher education in my home country of Iran. As a result, I immigrated to the United States to pursue my second degree in Film and Media Production because I believe filmmaking has the unique ability to change how we view its subjects, including many that have been consciously and unconsciously misrepresented. That’s why I am eager to work in documentary productions because I admire their desire to shed light on important, untold and unique stories. Migrating to United States by myself, made me resilient and eager to learn and grow and I want to use my skills to tell stories about the vulnerable, the marginalized and the lives deemed less important and the voices kept silent for much too long.  In addition to my work as an editor/ assistant editor, I was a panelist at the 9th Annual Human Rights Film Festival on the subject of immigration and alienation and was a participant and editor of the Dear Women short documentary. In 2020, I graduated from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism where I concentrated on shortform video and documentary film production. There, I created a niche in matching motion graphics-based explanatory journalism with traditional verite doc production. I learned and continue to master the primary skills necessary to complete a video/nonfiction film from conception to release: research/reporting, writing, shooting, design, editing, and animation. After graduating, I worked at POLITICO’s video department where I served as the lead animator and designer for the team, while also reporting and producing my own videos and series. I then worked at the Wondros Agency focusing on motion graphics, design, and writing for clients such as The United Nations, The U.S. Federal Covid Task Force, Hollywood Health and Society, and more. In 2022, I directed and produced Queer and Frum, a short documentary about two former Orthodox Jews in their unique journeys to becoming openly queer. The film is currently in the midst of a national festival tour and has already received multiple awards and accolades. Currently working full-time as a freelancer, I have a variety of video production skills and experience to meet a project’s needs. These days, it’s primarily writing, designing, and animating explainer-style video content. But regardless of the ask, the foundation is the same. A deep love and appreciation for non-fiction visual storytelling.
