So, nap lounges and other pay-to-rest establishments are popping up across the city to help people take sleep breaks during the day. A news story on a social platform that allows people to hire private chefs for home events and the challenges it faces in Hong Kong In the villages of Guizhou, China, there’s a rich tradition of embroidery. For the Miao, it’s not just an art form. It’s a means of communication. I'm a German multimedia journalist, currently based in Beijing and working as a video producer. For that job, I'm mainly working on cultural and travel topics as well as feature stories on interesting characters around China. I personally like to hunt for stories that do not get the appropriate attention from the fast paced news world, issues that appear at the borders of big news events and approach current affairs issues by zooming in on the people that are affected by the big news events.

About Karel D.
After growing up in Brussels as a US-born Belgian, my academic studies in Sinology in Ghent and and Chinese Law in London lead me to Beijing, China. There, I eventually started working as a freelance photographer/videographer with a preference for documentary and outdoor work, thus combining creative pursuits I had started developing while in secondary school with my passion for the outdoors and curiosity about society and culture. Over the years I have freelanced for various international and Chinese clients including news agencies such as McClatchy DC, car brands such as Infiniti, Chinese outdoor brands such as Ozark Gear and events like Air+Style Beijing. From August 2016 to October 2017 I worked at CTVS, a Beijing-based production company with a focus on live-broadcasting, news production and corporate video mainly in post-production and occasionally as a cameraman. At CTVS I enjoyed a high-degree of independence and often communicated directly with multiple stakeholders. Clients included ORF, TVE, Audi, Porsche, Mini and others. Now, I am again pursuing a freelance career. I have working proficiency in Dutch, French, English and Mandarin and can understand basic German and Spanish.

I am a Beijing based filmmaker specialising in short, creative, documentary style pieces. I have worked for various global media clients such as the BBC, the Guardian, CNN, Nat Geo, AJ+. I am currently completing my first feature length documentary on the intersection between kungfu and MMA in China, due to be released in 2017. Particular interests are the migration of people from countryside to city, and how countries like China are modernising themselves without becoming Westernised. My background is in photography, which has taught me to be meticulous with composition. I have also begun to make more use of drone footage in my videos, and slow motion capabilities.
