After graduating from Kansas State University in December 2013 with a B.A. in Journalism and Digital Media, I immediately moved to Birmingham, AL, to pursue work as a freelance cinematographer and editor. In January 2014, I began freelancing with Alabama Public Television to help provide engaging, educational content to the citizens of Alabama. I now work full-time with APT as a Documentary Production Specialist, but I continue to freelance as a film director, photographer, and documentarian. My interest lies in bridging cultural gaps in a historically segregated region by documenting the experiences of those living in low-income areas through photography and film/video. I take a personal interest in the historical, political, and economic circumstances that have contributed to and continue to fuel segregative action in the South. Through documenting both the catalysts and results of educational, economic, and social inequalities, I hope to contribute to a global understanding of them.

As a visual storyteller specializing in non-fiction, he provides regional coverage of contemporary social issues for a wide range of editorial clients. As a film director, Bob extends the same journalistic ethos to commercial storytelling, crafting original content to promote reputable brands. Bob accepts commissions from anyone who has a desire to leverage authentic storytelling. It is his conviction that a good story transcends barriers – pushing us beyond our own experience into the reality that we are all characters living similar narratives, facing like challenges.

I’m an award-winning independent visual journalist and multimedia producer based in Atlanta, Ga. shooting assignments for national publications as I cultivate personal projects. Bylines include The Wall Street Journal, Education Week, The Guardian, The Week, US News and World Report and Femsplain. I also film and edit documentary-style advertising for folks like YouTube and Whole Foods and serve as a contributing editor for Scalawag Magazine, "a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating and examining the American South." My work opens an intimate window into the lives of my subjects and their families, often focusing on the intersections between economic justice, race and gender. I started my reporting career at a mid-sized newspaper in Tennessee where I worked my way up from photo intern to multimedia reporter. I spearheaded the video and photo coverage for our long term projects, building relationships and access to produce more than ten award-winning presentations.   My journalism honors include an EPPY, 2014 Dart Award finalist, Associated Press awards for photojournalism, multimedia and best website, the "Award of Excellence" from the Society of News Design, Green Eyeshade Awards for "Best Website" and "Best Multimedia,"  the McGill Journalism Fellowship and the Cox Media Leadership Certificate.

Born in the small town of Millington, NJ 30 miles outside of New York City, James Cullen grew up wanting to be a novelist, and attended Boston College in pursuit of that end. What happened in between is a novel, with stints as a paralegal, high voltage electrician, a professional chef, and now full circle, a journalist/photojournalist. A graduate of NYC's renowned French Culinary Institute, James worked with some of the finest chefs in the business and uses his knowledge and real world experience to inform his writing and photography. He now resides in New Orleans. His work has appeared in Louisiana Kitchen and Culture, Very Local NOLA, Antigravity Magazine, and Business Insider, and covers a diverse range of interests, from food and beverage to hip-hop and New Orleans community and culture.
