Lucas is an American filmmaker, primarily working in documentary as a director, cinematographer and editor. In addition to documentary, he has also directed and shot dance films, music videos and fashion commercials. In 2012, the IFP at Lincoln Center listed Lucas as one of the top “Emerging Visions” in film, highlighting his ongoing filmmaking in Kazakhstan. He was also a 2012 Fellow at the New York Film Festival’s Artists Academy. Lucas’ notable collaborations are as cinematographer on feature documentary Last Man in Dhaka Central (2015), a portrait of Dutch philosopher Peter Custers, directed by Naeem Mohaiemen. Last Man in Dhaka Central premiered at the 2015 Venice Biennale and was featured at the MoMA Documentary Fortnight in 2016, DocLisboa, and International Film Festival Rotterdam. Lucas also shot the feature length documentary OXD: One Extraordinary Day (2015), a portrait of choreographer Elizabeth Streb’s epic dance pieces that premiered during the London Olympiad in 2012. OXD premiered at DOCNYC, and continues to play at documentary festivals throughout the United States. Lucas’ debut documentary short, Sacrifice: A Slaughterhouse Documentary (2010), has been viewed by tens of thousands of people online, and is one of the top user-rated videos on documentary.net. The film has been the object of praise and controversy -for its cinematography and atmospheric sound design, as well as its graphic subject matter.

I am a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and a former board member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network. The work I have done has shone a light into the dark corners where bad behavior, incompetency and dishonesty hide. I tell the stories of the ordinary person who isn't being heard. A recent story on cybercrime revealed how your on-line bank account can look normal while criminals are stealing your money or how they can lock up your computer and force you to pay a ransom. Another story showed how young workers in Asia who make your phone, your tablet, your computer are getting cancers because they work with chemicals that have been banned in western countries. My strengths lie in being organized, thinking ahead and keeping things moving towards the goal posts. I can be obsessed but in a good way, and only on projects.

I've been working in TV, Media & Tech for 10 years, predominantly focused on video production & post production operations. In that time I've grown from being a Production Assistant to a Supervisor, overseeing Production Managers & Post Production Managers at Shopify. In addition to having different roles, I've also worked on a variety of media formats, from TV series to film productions to online social content. At Shopify, I've been able to build the foundation for Producers to scale out their productions so we could publish content at a faster rate. In the past three years alone myself and team have been a part of 300+ original videos & associating social assets. This content ranges from TV/Film Series’, short/medium length documentaries, online advertisements, YouTube series’, social & educational content. Some of the highlights in my career are, building a video production operation at a tech company that had no experience producing content (resourcing, tooling, budgeting, managing, etc). Constructing a media server to house all our footage & creating a media asset management system to easily tag, search & find all these assets to reuse & repurpose. In short, I've had many different experiences in my career, which has allowed me to build a wide range of skills, on a variety of video formats. I feel I am able to wear multiple hats, and contribute to productions in many different ways.
