About Lance M.

I create handcrafted documentary films full of heart and empathy. Films that inspire and resonate long after viewing. Stories of heroes and victims, science and progress, climate and environment. With more than 20 years as a photojournalist and filmmaker, my passion for storytelling has taken me from the burning ghats of Varanasi, India, to a smuggler's tunnel in Nogales, Mexico. Capturing the complexities of the human spirit and creating images that move others to act is the greatest gift of my profession. During my newspaper career, I was twice named Scripps Howard photographer of the year and earned dozens of national and international awards. I work for newspapers, including The Washington Post and NY Times, magazines and media outlets, as well as commercial and nonprofit clients. I also teach video storytelling and serve as a board member of the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. I have made two very successful feature length documentaries – one about a homeless man running from his demons and finding grace in unlikely places, and another about finding solutions to racial inequality following the death of George Floyd. My short films have earned three Emmys and a national Addy. I live in Boulder, Colorado and welcome any assignments or inquiries, near or far.

Shelley has written, filmed/recorded and produced long and short format stories for The Voice of America (voanews.com), All Things Considered, Here and Now, NPR and various regional news outlets. She's been news director of KGNU Boulder/Denver (kgnu.org), and developed training programs for children and adults in how to be radio producers. In a past life, Shelley headed up Customer Education for a computer company that was known as NBI. Her staff of 24 professionals helped develop the some of the industry's first standalone training manuals for regular people, so they could train themselves in word processing and computer database/spreadsheet programs without intensive assistance from one-on-one trainers.

Worked in Broadcast news for more then 4 decades as director, producer, editor and photographer. I am a Heartland chapter of NATAS 2014 Silver Circle Inductee. Winner five regional Emmys nominated for five more. Done work in Europe, Vietnam and Japan. I own all of my own equipment including editing. I love doing stories from start to finish.

I am a journalist and a filmmaker who recently graduated from the University of Colorado-Boulder with my Master's of Arts in Journalism. I have been creating short film documentaries largely focused on varying parts of the city of Denver; these include the Hip-Hop music scene as well as the larger music scene. In addition to the focus on music and community in Denver, I have also covered politics in Boulder and produced live coverage of the Colorado Democratic Party in Denver for Election Night 2016 for our journalism graduate blog. Lastly, I have run a Hip-Hop and pop culture blog for the past eight years, interviewing numerous local and national acts. Cypher Sessions is still going strong and has provided me with concert coverage and speaker coverage in both Denver and Boulder.

With a focus in documentary, I've edited pieces that fit into an array of categories ranging from "Fantorial" teasers for SYFY to fundraising videos for Make-A-Wish. Having worked through many quick turn arounds as well as sifting through mountains of footage to slowly craft a story arc, I'm ready to take on projects of all sizes. Being well-versed in all aspects of post-production, I can take a hard drive full of of footage to a well-polished finished product.
