Sierra Leoneans have experienced compounded traumatic exposures, from the 1991-2002 civil war to the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic and beyond. Long after these experiences, the mental health impact lasts. Yet like many other low-income settings that have gone through conflict and crises, mental health services are nowhere near the level needed to meet people’s rights and needs. The government has yet to make the investments needed to realize its policy commitments on mental health, and donor support has been insufficient. 17-year-old M’Balu Tucker lives in a poor village in Sierra Leone and could not afford to pay her school fees. But she has a new source of income, thanks to an IFC-supported program that leverages the demand for sanitation supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic to teach adolescent girls a skill: making soap. The project is implemented by World Hope International.
