In Liberia, millions of children are waking up to a world of hunger, poverty and disease. This case study was produced as part of a Save the Children UK campaign. Co-filmed by Arwen Kidd. Across 38 markets in Liberia, thousands of market women are entering classrooms to learn essential business skills. With new skills in budgeting, savings, banking, and business planning, market women are taking their businesses to the next level and gaining new confidence in their futures and in themselves. Liberia walks, runs, dances and rises to call for an end to violence against women and girls on February 14, 2013. Alhassan Kemokwai was one of the first Ebola survivors to walk out of Kenema Government Hospital during the peak of the outbreak. We met Alhassan and followed his story. Story was acquired by The Guardian UK Sierra Leoneans have experienced compounded traumatic exposures, from the 1991-2002 civil war to the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic and beyond. Long after these experiences, the mental health impact lasts. Yet like many other low-income settings that have gone through conflict and crises, mental health services are nowhere near the level needed to meet people’s rights and needs. The government has yet to make the investments needed to realize its policy commitments on mental health, and donor support has been insufficient. 17-year-old M’Balu Tucker lives in a poor village in Sierra Leone and could not afford to pay her school fees. But she has a new source of income, thanks to an IFC-supported program that leverages the demand for sanitation supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic to teach adolescent girls a skill: making soap. The project is implemented by World Hope International.

I am a Canadian journalist and documentary filmmaker, who has been working internationally since 2005. During this time, I have directed, produced, shot, and/or edited more than thirty film projects - traveling with all my own equipment and learning to find creative solutions in sometimes challenging situations. Along with a combined honours degree in Journalism and International Development Studies from the University of King's College (Canada), I also studied Documentary Filmmaking at Prague Film School, and completed an MA in Global Media and Transnational Communications at Goldsmith's, University of London. I have spent much of my career working on projects across Western Africa and Eastern Europe, and am currently based out of Monrovia, Liberia. I am Ronnie Larry Tucker. I was born and raised in Freetown. Studied Mass Communication at Fourah Bay college (graduated with a honors degree). I have worked as a radio producer for a few radio stations in Freetown. Also worked as Public Relations and Marketing officer for Vickie Remoe and company in 2016. I moved on to set up my photography company - Ronnie's Photography which in the past has covered events, done photo journalism for top organisations such as Catholic Relief Services.
