We were commissioned by Procter & Gamble to show how Always sanitary pads are changing the lives of young girls in Kenya. With access to affordable feminine health products, girls are able to stay in school longer. We mobilized a crew in Nairobi in less than 24 hours. Working in both English and Swahili, we produced and directed both video and stills. The CNN Heroes series profiled Minneapolis’ Vednita Carter, who has helped more than 6,000 victims of sex trafficking. Once a former sex worker herself, Vednita has built an army of survivors who have joined her crusade to end sex trafficking. Taking an empathetic approach to a difficult subject, we worked to make the women comfortable on camera while also protecting their identities. The USAA, a leading financial and insurance provider for the military community, wanted to show their dedication to military families. Working with VSA Partners in Chicago, Intersect profiled Gene Kranz, former NASA flight control director for Apollo 13. We shot in Houston and worked closely with NASA to get access to locations and archival footage. I managed to get exclusive footage of what appears to be a security agent dressed as a protestor chasing demonstrators and receiving a teargas canister from uniformed police. To just show where the protest ended with police fearing tear gas. But I still managed to stick to the subject which was Anti corruption demonstration organised by Activist Boniface Mwangi. Director, Producer and a cameraman at the same time. I did the planing since all this did not happen in one day. At first I had to spend few minutes with the characters to make them feel, I am part of the space and after few minutes everything was just flowing. They could not tell if I was there filming apart from the moment where I was asking question and changing position. Art I was filming Kenya Election in Mathare, Kibra and Kawangware dangerous slums in Nairobi. I was the Director,Producer at the same time Camera operator, planing made it easy for me. I just made few calls to find out the right place to be, make sure my security is okay, carry what I needed most that is Camera, Tripod and Mic. I always travel simple to make my work easy. CREATIVITY IS THE WAY TO GO it was a nice piece of work. great working with a German filmmaker and she really liked the idea and the outcome of this short documentary and enjoyed the shoot but she was so emotional on how people live in this slums.Though it was a nice experince for her and she learned alot from us and the slum culture and matatu culture as well and she was a very creative director who thinks very fast........ It was a good and loving experince to work with and a very funny comedian on this advert..it was my first edit for a commercial advertisemnt and it was a good feeling to have such an opportunity to do this and work with different charcaters on this..though i had a little bit of pressure and tension cause it was my first edit of commercial and i had a good director who was encouraging now and then, It was a nice experience to work on this advertisement and i really enjoyed it so much and i liked the enthusiasm of the director and the effort he made for us to deliver this assignment..It was with lots of pressure but i manged to contain the pressure from both angles and i deliver the work within a very short period of days and the work was so marvelous. i am working on my new project now view. On day one, harvesters cut out these river reeds. And in 8 days, after drying, burning and filtering, the reeds will produce one of the most expensive salts in the world. Just one tablespoon of river reed salt costs about $1 in Kenya. Compare that to the 4 cents it costs locals for the same amount of sea salt. So how do producers make salt from river reeds? And why is it so expensive?

About Elijah K.
My name is Elijah Kanyi, a Filmmaker. Born and bred in Mathare Slum, one of the biggest slums in East Africa, I have learnt many life lessons and witnessed so many injustices. Being born in a slum is like being born in the wild; life there is a classic case of survival for the fittest. I have seen it all. One of the best things i have gotten from Mathare are good friends who have helped raise my life's standards, reminded me of my essential purpose and challenged me to be the best version of myself. I am who i am today because they give me the courage and confidence to tell their stories through the lens- a cameraman. My biggest motivation for taking this line of work came from what the media aired about Mathare. There were many stories to be told but the slum residents did not trust the reporters because they were strangers to them. As a resident of Mathare Slum, it is easier for me to source for stories ranging from corruption in the constituency development fund to robbery and police brutality. I have gained the trust of the residents and they call upon me to air their grievances and hardships.

About James P.
I grew up and studied in London, completed an MA at the University of Edinburgh then enrolled in a year of fine art at City & Guilds. In 2015, aged 24, I was offered a position in Madagascar with the opportunity to work in some of the most inaccessible parts of the island; photographing, filming and reporting for a humanitarian NGO. Over 2 years, my work with this NGO trained me to read the human stories through the veils of culture, history and language. The richness I witnessed in these perspectives compelled me to communicate the truths of marginalised people. With this vocation, I returned to Madagascar independently to explore the unheard stories of this vast and intricate nation. Currently based in Nairobi, I am operating across East Africa but forever plotting my next return to Mada.
