London is home to the world's biggest and most diverse dance music scene. Each weekend, it vibrates to the sound of every imaginable style of club music. It's a scene shaped by immigration and the hard knocks of city life, both of which fuelled the incredible feats of creativity that led to jungle, garage, grime, dubstep and UK funky. London is rightly known as a capital of sonic innovation. London may be one of dance music's most important cities, but it's also one of its most troubled. It has reached a defining moment for nightlife culture. From club closures, to widespread police pressure on venues, to the looming threats of gentrification and Brexit, dance music in London has often felt under siege. In Real Scenes: London, we meet the artists, promoters and venue owners who have confronted these challenges head on. It's never been easy here, but an undercurrent of radio, DIY venues, new music and emerging talent still finds a way to survive and thrive—at least for now. "90 minutes of spine-tingling euphoria." I was the director of a 9-camera shoot of Bicep's live show at Printworks. The video was included in the Design Museum's 2020 exhibition, 'Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers'. Four years ago, Marea Stamper was ready to give up. Since her early 20s she'd been determined to make it as a DJ and a producer, and after years of doggedly pursuing this goal—teaching herself to play, taking every gig she could get, moving to Chicago from her hometown in Kentucky—she was certain she had failed. Things have changed immeasurably since then. Not long after that hopeless moment, Stamper got a job as the talent buyer at smartbar, Chicago's best underground club. One thing led to another, and before she knew it she was traveling every weekend, playing gigs at many of the best clubs and festivals in the world. This was thanks to her personal resolve and her style as a DJ—party-rocking but smart, often blowing through disco, techno, EBM and '80s pop in a single set. But there was something deeper at play as well, which eventually made her a kind of house music icon. By rising through the ranks as an undiluted version of herself—an outspoken, queer-identifying liberal and feminist with a habit of sweatily rocking out in the booth—she gives the world of dance music a much-needed jolt, and her fans love her for it. As we followed her on a string of gigs across Europe, we found her in the midst of a whirlwind, reeling from her chaotic new life but confidently charging through it, and still pinching herself that it was really happening. The city of Grasse, on the French Riviera, is a smell above the rest. The town is known as the perfume capital of the world—and with good reason. Grasse is responsible for producing iconic scents for everyone from Chanel to Louis Vuitton. The town is currently home to over 60 perfumeries—the oldest of which dates back to 1747—and fields of flowers that have birthed the world’s most famous fragrances. Join us as we journey through what might be the best-smelling city on the planet. Among the Jura Mountains in Western Switzerland, just a few miles off the border of France, is a city where time begins. Sitting at the center of an area known as “Watch Valley,” La Chaux-de-Fonds is the beating heart of the Swiss watchmaking industry. Some of the world’s most expensive and renowned brands have workshops in the city that continue to produce intricate, incredibly sought after timepieces. Join us as we meet the artisans keeping Switzerland’s watchmaking legacy forever ticking. As one of Europe’s most famous cities, Budapest has become a tourist hotspot known for its history, its architecture and its love of water. While most people soak above the surface in the city’s famed geothermal baths, below the metropolis lies a secret subterranean world ripe for exploration. The Hungarian capital is home to over 80 geothermal springs. As this naturally heated water flowed deep below the Earth’s surface, it carved out hundreds of caves, making Budapest home to the largest collection of thermal caves in the world. Though divers have charted more than four miles of tunnels since the 1950s, much remains to be explored.

About Tom C.
“A story will help us make sense of anything” - Philip Pullman* Be it religion, philosophy, technology, or brand values, stories enable us to understand concepts in a way that stays with us. The key is not just knowing your message, but really knowing your audience. I’m an experienced short form Producer/Director working in Copenhagen, London and around the world. I work on projects from creative to delivery, and have covered several roles in the process. Over the last few years I’ve worked for BBC, Great Big Story, CNN Commercial, LEGO, MarlowFilm, and The Film Agency to produce beautiful films that really engage the audience. Having worked, hands on, at all stages of the production process, I am well used to dealing with agencies and production companies, as well as working for them. Through this experience I am also used to managing clients, industry service providers, and specialist freelancers, both at domestically and internationally. In all the work I do I deliver what’s desired, but push the boundaries wherever possible to ensure the tone and message established in the creative, or client vision is amplified. At the heart of all my projects, however, is a story; one that communicates what is desired by engaging meaningfully with the target audience. * From New Scientist, Rowan Hooper, 16th May 2020

About Zoe L.
Hello, I'm Zoe, a filmmaker born & bred in London. I've worked in the industry for over 6 years, starting off as a humble delivery driver supplying productions around the UK with all the optical, camera, lighting and grip equipment they needed. Today I love working behind the camera, whether as a self-shooting PD or working alongside a full crew, I just love to shoot. But it's not all camera camera camera for me. Before going freelance I spent 4 years working in-house at an agency as a Producer & Director, working predominantly on big fashion campaigns, live shows and documentaries. I have the upmost respect for the fashion industry, having had the privilege to work from the inside for many years and the good fortune to maintain my old clients so I can continue to collaborate. Since being freelance, I've branched out into sport and live action, given my own love and passion for competition, fitness and documenting humans pushing the boundaries. I have a full GVC drone licence and my own DJI Air 2S which I love to go fly! Please don't hesitate to give me a nudge if you want to discuss any productions, in whatever stage or capacity you're at. I'm always, always around for a chat. Zoe
