Mexico has tens of millions of millennials with access to the internet - and they love YouTube. So much so, that the country is home to hundreds of ‘YouTubers’, young people trying to make their living from the art of building an online audience and garnering likes, subscribers and internet fame. Some are from humble backgrounds like the group behind the YMX Supervivencia channel, who have more than 70,000 subscribers but see YouTube only as a platform for their future ambitions and the careers they are forging for themselves. Others, like Los Jonas Vloggers, are giving a voice to a generation of LGBT youth grappling with their identities in a Mexico which is rapidly becoming more plural and tolerant while holding on to some vestiges of prejudice. I produced and helped film this short documentary for the Americas Now programme on CGTN America. A center for therapy and rehabilitation opened last year in Ecatepec, a giant municipality north of Mexico City which has long suffered with high levels of crime and deprivation. One of the services it offers is equine therapy, provided by four steeds once used by the local police. It provides a lifeline for children like Kathy Lopez, who is severely autistic, is unable to attend state primary schools and has difficulty talking and controlling her movements. But once a week, for the past two months, these problems melt away when she attends her regular horse therapy sessions. I produced this package for CGTN America correspondent Alasdair Baverstock. Dunia Camacho Marenco is a world champion swimmer who holds eight world records and has won 58 medals – 28 of them gold — in nine World Championships. She also has Down Syndrome. The Mexican athlete is the reigning world champion in her sport’s Female Down Syndrome category. Yet she is facing a fight outside the pool as she depends heavily on government funding to compete for Mexico on the global stage. But the money hasn’t appeared for more than three years, forcing Dunia and her coaches to seek the charity of friends and family. I produced and helped shoot this story for CGTN America. OBESE sisters aged just six and eight who had a combined weight of 22 stone have undergone surgery in an attempt to lose weight. The two sisters from India, Yogita now eight, and Amisha, now six, weighed a massive 59kg and 82kg respectively at their heaviest. Videography + Editing for a short documentary exploring how Art + Design education can communicate across borders and counter xenophobia. Students at an international sixth-form in London designed a multi-national recipe book and deconstructed a wall of food. The film was selected for the Freelands Foundation Occupation of the Tate Exchange at Tate Modern in May 2017 Limbo//Accra is a collective of artists and architects reimagining public space through site specific installations in abandoned property developments. I was asked to document their inaugural exhibition which focused on art's connection to the global conversation around public vs private space. A promo video shot and edited by me for Pro Apparel, the sponsor of the 2019 Uniwake Wakeboarding Event held every March. The Making of Series 2 with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the Fleabag team. About Thomas G.
Hello and welcome! I am a British DP/Videographer currently based in the UK with experience shooting internationally. From 2015 I had been living, working and thriving in the Film/TV/Media industry in Shanghai, China. Over the subsequent 7 years I developed my career as a professional Director of Photography, with the majority of my experience focusing on (but not limited to) documentary filmmaking and commercials - specifically beauty, cosmetics and product advertising niches. I like to think my experience perfectly marries the aspects of shooting on location and telling a story using minimal resources with the technical aspects of managing, lighting and shooting in a studio with cinema-grade equipment. Having worked predominantly in production houses and creative agencies, I have been able to expand my skillset and work on other areas of projects where needed - both in pre and post-production. As such, I have worked as in-house editor and colourist for the other half of time I am not shooting, as well as developed production decks with creative teams, consulted for graphic design teams when storyboarding, used 3D software to mock up and pre-vis scenes, communicated with online post-production vendors and am clear and confident when speaking with clients and visiting executives in a directorial role.
