I have experience producing documentary films, writing feature articles, and packaging radio & TV pieces. I'm an American based in Bogotá, Colombia, with experience working in English, Spanish and French. In 2015, following dreams of being a full-time storyteller, I moved to India to co-direct a documentary about an orphanage outside the city of Hyderabad. Most recently, I served as the managing editor at Innovations | Stories, an online publication sharing the stories of social innovators all over the Global South. While at Innovations | Stories I designed and spearheaded a multimedia editorial strategy which allowed for more diverse content (a heavier focus on photo and video stories). As managing editor I supported video and photo freelance contributors from all over the world and designed storytelling trainings for social innovators to tell their own stories. I'm originally from Berkeley, California, USA and I earned my B.S. from the University of California, Davis in Community and Regional Development with a minor in Art Studio (focusing on video and photography). From 2010-2015 I directed a global education program called One World Youth Project (OWYP), based in Washington, DC. At OWYP I designed middle school (age 10-14) curriculum and trained university students to teach it around the world in their own communities. The program taught the children cross-cultural communication by empowering them to create and send video, photo, and written messages to their partner classroom abroad - all facilitated by trained university student volunteers. While serving as program director at OWYP I had the privilege of traveling around the world visiting schools and delivering trainings at universities. My work in education and the opportunity to see so much of the world made me realize I wanted to tell stories. Storytelling is the best form of education anyway.

Tom Laffay is a visual journalist, DP and director specializing in working on long term projects in Latin America bringing a cinematic look with journalistic rigor. Currently based in Colombia, he has been dedicated to covering the ongoing violence against human rights defenders over the course of the country's troubled peace process since 2016 and frequently shoots for media like ARD Germany, El Espectador and contributes to The Atlantic and The Guardian. Tom is bilingual (English / Spanish) and travels extensively producing short documentary films for New Media Advocacy Project and IUCN in South America, Africa and the US and since 2011 he has worked with La Isla Network to advance improvements in the agricultural labor sector in Central America. Recently he has begun working as a DP on more narrative films for directors Sean Mattison, Emily Wright and Antonio Santini and is interested in pursuing that path. I am a multimedia journalist covering human rights and socio-political issues, based between Latin America and Southeast Asia. I have reported on sexual violence, internal forced displacement, kidnapping, the reintegration of ex-militants from illegal armed groups into society, and the impact of drug policies on the livelihoods of coca farmers. I have also documented Cambodia’s post conflict rapid development and its impact on the Cambodian population including land grabs, civil unrest and the recession of natural resources. Avant-Garde was born in 2014 in Bogota - Colombia, by a filmmaker that wanted to have the creative freedom to develop his ideas and grow professionally in a country that is a current hub of video and sound production worldwide. In the beginning, we dedicated ourselves exclusively to audiovisual projects, and we complemented our portfolio, providing services such as; rental and loans of equipment for the entertainment industry. In 2017, we made a strategic alliance with Aura Records to strengthen our services in sound design and music production, offering premium services that meet international standards of quality. Three years later, at the beginning of 2020, we expanded our headquarters to provide a physical space development of artistic and multicultural projects. My interest in photography began with a taste for visual documentation of urban sports in the early 2000s, expanding the most essential relationship between narrative and documentary language. In 2015 I joined the Colombian news agency Colprensa, where I worked for two years covering national news, being able to portray an important chapter of the current national history, the Peace Agreement between the National Government and the FARC Guerrilla in 2016. Parallel to this I made collaborations for Agencia EFE (Spanish government news agency) from 2017 to 2021. From 2020 until today I have done longer documentary work with a social focus that seeks to offer alternative narratives to the institutionalized ones. Part of this is the work with Agenda Propia (Latin American media of social ethnic issues in the region) Geo Lino (German children's magazine), Stranger's Guide (American magazine), Specialty Coffee Association (British magazine) and UNDP (United Nations Development Programme). I took technical studies in photography in 2011, a series of advanced courses in photography during the following years, in 2018 I did part of the summer semester at the University of Hannover, Germany, for the International Documentary Photography Class, an advanced program that promotes new talents from all over the world and exchanges ideas with European photographers and in 2019 I did part of the IWMF Adelante program in investigative journalism in risk contexts.
