2 reviewsLAURA OTÁLORA, (Bogotá, Colombia 1989) is an award-winning visual anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. From an early age she wanted to merge social and cultural studies with the visual arts, so she decided to study Anthropology with an emphasis in Art History and Theory at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. After finishing her degree she traveled to Spain to do a Masters in Visual Anthropology at the University of Barcelona. Later he decided to expand his knowledge in the audiovisual area, starting another Master's Degree in Documentary Film at the Barcelona Film School (ECIB).
Since then she has worked in the realization of other documentaries in areas such as methodological research, script, production, DOP and post-production. For three years he coordinated the production company CAD ProducUons, where he developed several projects for international organizations such as the UN and the World Bank, covering topics such as Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Food Security in several countries in Africa, America, Europe and Asia. Among these projects, he directed the documentary interacUvo Kijanal, about the food sovereignty of the indigenous peoples of Chiapas and Yucatan in Mexico. He also worked on the documentary series REDD+ in Africa, for the World Bank, on climate change mitigation in several African countries.
In parallel she parUcipated as co-founder of the Cook n Roots project, dedicated to the invesUgation of the roots of gastronomy, through Visual Anthropology, filming diverse cultural ways of understanding gastronomy, developing a broad knowledge of the gastronomic cultures of several countries.
In 2019 she directed her first feature film Chef's Diaries Scotland, a documentary where the Roca brothers from the presUgious restaurant Celler de Can Roca, invesUgate about traditional products and cuisines from Spain and Scotland. It won the award for best documentary at the Girona International Film FesUval and was selected for various festivals such as the Malaga FesUval, Sea`le InternaUonal Film FesUval and the Edinburgh InternaUonal Film FesUval among many others. It is also available on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Filmin and Mubi.
Since 2019 she returned to Bogota where she works in directing and directing series and documentaries around Colombia. In 2021 the series Dis;l Your World premiered on Amazon Prime Video, in which he did the script and direction of two chapters, this same year he also directed the documentary series Vivas, which will premiere in 2022 on several Colombian TV channels. She is currently directing two feature documentaries: Impermanentes and Capitán. She is also the content director of the workshop Apichatpong Weerasethakul Lab: Filming in the Amazon and is a professor of Documentary Film at the National Film School (ENACC).
