Bangladesh exemplifies the triple blow that many emerging market countries have suffered from #COVID19: domestic slowdown caused by the disease and the efforts to contain its spread; a sharp decline in exports, particularly in the ready-made garment sector, and a drop in remittances. Meet Farzana Khan, the woman behind the first palliative care programme set up in the middle of a humanitarian response. This Rohingya mother thought she had lost her son to violence in Myanmar. Then she received a letter. When I learned that Temple University's Tokyo campus had no sexual assault resources of its own, I wanted to profile a student who was forced to go through the Philadelphia campus' protocol — with a 13 hour time difference. I sat down in a Tokyo cafe with LLLL, a Japanese electronic artist who made an appearance at Tokyo Dance Music Event last year. documentary series "Donald Trump is throwing red meat to followers of the QAnon conspiracy, a primary vehicle of disinformation and far-right bile that could shape the outcome of the 2020 election." THE RUN UP is a collaborative show and podcast for the last month before the 2020 election, from The Real News team, coordinated by Editor in Chief Maximillian Alvarez, Managing Editor Lisa Snowden-McCray, and General Assignment Producer Andrew Corkery. The harried and, frankly, terrifying period surrounding this election will be a time when people are desperate for information, desperate for sharp reporting and commentary that helps them cut through the bullshit punditry and political doublespeak, desperate to hear from—and learn how they can join—those who are fighting to keep hope, justice, and love alive as the world darkens. That’s why our team is coming together to bring you “The Run Up.”

About Jane V.
As a prizewinning journalist, I specialize in writing about people, employment, business and workplace issues. Even as a youngster, I knew I wanted to be a reporter and began my career at age 10, working for my elementary school newspaper. I haven't stopped since, even though I recently left the Philadelphia Inquirer in search of new adventures and challenges. At the Inquirer, I worked as an editor and reporter for many years, with the last 20 years of my career there focused on business, executive leadership, employment, economics, labor, workplace issues, the business of philanthropy, courts, retailing and marketing, always with a gift for telling stories through people. For the last several years, I was the author of a weekly Q&A with area executives. My biggest recent accomplishment was co-founding what is now known as ReSolve Philadelphia, an innovative and prizewinning media collaborative. I had the idea that normally competing media outlets should instead collaborate to cover one important story a year. By doing this, we would share our technical expertise (radio, video, print, social media) and our subject matter expertise (employment, in my case), while trying to make a difference in our city. In our first year, we tackled issues involving people returning from prison. The collaborative earned awards as did my work individually in it. Now that I've left the Inquirer, my involvement is limited, although I still contribute and will join the board when there is one. it These days, I'm freelancing, handling corporate work and journalism, and collaborating on a book on worker safety. I also teach writing, both as a coach for business students at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and as a teacher working with adults aiming to earn their high school diplomas. To me, the most exciting part about journalism is the exposure to ideas and people.

About Andrew C.
Raised in southern New Jersey outside Philadelphia, and now residing in Baltimore Maryland, Andrew Corkery worked as a Visual Producer / Editor/ Researcher for the Real News Network. Prior to that he worked for nearly four years as Video Editor for CBS 3 Eyewitness News, and an Investigative Journalist for Spirit News both in Philadelphia. He graduated from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey in May of 2014 with a Bachelor's degree in Digital Media. While in college Andrew completed a media education and co op work program at CAPA London, working as a researcher and video editor for COAST, a digital strategy and brand film content production company. Andrew maintains a relentlessly keen interest in all things geopolitics in almost every corner of the globe. He has since applied this passion and interest to his creative and investigative work as a producer, editor, journalist and videographer. One of his most impactful pieces focused on a story outlining how to combat Islamophobia in communities across the world, articulating the differences between Radical Islamists and the vast majority of people who follow Islam, while showing the many layers of nuance, both in politics and religion more broadly. That Story, "Islam in the Riverwards: PART 1 AND 2," along with "Being Black in Bridesburg", a story highlighting the impacts and legacy of racial injustice in a largely white community within Philadelphia, were both published in Spirit News and later featured in write ups from The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Magazine. With Andrew's career expanding experience of living and working abroad in mind, he recognizes the importance of staying connected to the world. The cornerstones of Andrew's work can always be found in uncovering the expansive impact of global events and political issues, while relating them to people's everyday lives, through the mediums of online video, film and writing. Finally, Andrew is currently the Lead Singer and Member Manager of a successful original alternative rock band called Shadowplay, based in Mt. Laurel, NJ, founded in 2008 at Lenape High School. The band has since performed over 200 shows, including performances at such festivals as SXSW, and opening up for bands like Tracy Guns, Weitz and The Parlor Mob.
