When I first picked up a camera, I could've never imagined the power this tool wields. It has become my passport to other places, cultures, peoples, and the stories I've been fortunate to share. Effective visual storytelling allows us to learn about the world through first hand accounts, frame by frame. I am a Cuban-American visual storyteller from Miami, FL. I graduated from Syracuse University where I double-majored in photojournalism and international relations with a focus in the international political economy of Latin America and the Caribbean. I am passionate about telling stories visually and I am specifically interested in narratives that relate to sports and culture. I intend for my work to bring attention to specific issues and help promote positive change. My work has received awards in the College Photographer of the Year competition and has been recognized in various NPPA contests. During the summer of 2017, I interned with the Miami Herald. In 2018, I attended the prestigious Eddie Adams Photojournalism Workshop (XXXI). I am currently a Roy H. Joseph Carter has over 15 years of experience in Latin America- mostly in Brazil where he was based in Rio de Janeiro. He has worked as a cameraman, presenter, producer and actor for Brazilian, European and American channels and production companies on a freelance basis for the last 13 years. He is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, English and Italian (and some French), and has an extensive web of contacts throughout Central and South America. This has helped him produce and film stories ranging from following drug gangs in the Rio slums, to illegal gold mining and logging in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon, following police operations against gangs in the Caracas slums of Petaré and La Vega, to covering the Colombian conflicts in the Choco, Putumayo and Cauca regions of Colombia. He began his career as a sociologist and earned a Masters in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin before moving to Washington D.C. and working in International Development. After 2 years in Washington he moved to Latin America where he still resides. He understands the complex web of issues and contradictions throughout the region and has extensive experience in practically every country.
