I was awarded a Rory Peck Trust Training Bursary in 2013 to participate in an intensive hostile-environment training course at Columbia Journalism School. I am a print journalist and aspiring photojournalist based in Boston, with training in radio and video production. I hold Bachelor's degrees in English and Biology from Davidson College and a Master's degree in Science Writing from MIT. I have written stories for New Scientist, Harvard Magazine, MIT Tech Review, EMBLetc, and other online and print publications, and have performed at Storycollider in Boston. I love telling stories about a wide variety of topics, especially anything that involves traveling (I have traveled to every continent except Antarctica, but that's on my list)! My dream assignment would take me to Cuba to get an insider's look at what that country and culture have been like under US sanctions for the last 50 years, so that I can document that way of life before it changes drastically following changing political mandates. My best known work is as co-producer of HBO Documentary Film's HEROIN: CAPE COD, USA, working one-on-one with Oscar-winning director Steven Okazaki for 18 months. (nominated for CINEMA EYE HONORS 2017) I'm also a media strategy consultant and social impact producer. Recent SIP credits are HBO docs WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY KILL YOU and RISKY DRINKING. My background is in journalism, documentary filmmaking, writing, and photography. I've worked extensively in Indian Country, and have worked a wide range of situations, from traveling press during the Obama '08 campaign to filming a doc in Maidan during the Ukraine revolution. I have worked for many years in media and public policy, and specialize in the use of film/media as a means for positive social impact. I recently went back to graduate school to earn my Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in 2011 and then spent three years as a research Fellow at Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. Graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Kevin Luiz spent four years learning the art of film direction. I'm a Boston-based filmmaker/photographer. Through videography, photography and traveling, I have shaped a business around helping people craft their story and share their message. In early 2016, I launched a YouTube channel and a website dedicated to this philosophy. Shortly after this, I moved to Korea to teach English to middle school students.
