I am an Italian independent filmmaker based in Italy. I come from an academic/journalistic background: I researched in History, Politics and Social Studies during my university years in Rome and London and reported from the Middle East and Africa. The first time I approached filmmaking was just a couple of years ago and it was a revelation. I understood that what I was really looking for were peoples personal stories mirroring the macro events I researched and witnessed during my academic years and working experience. Since then, I built a team of professionals with the same targets and interests and with whom I am currently collaborating. At the moment, I am working on a documentary about the global market of khat, a natural amphetamine cultivated in the Horn of Africa. But with the recent dramatic political changes in the Mediterranean area, I am looking forward to focus on my country, engaging with little-known and underreported stories of migration, environment and human rights.

I was born in Qaladze, Iraqi Kurdistan, in 1988. In 2006 I found the photographic archive of my father, who was a photographer between 1975 – 1992. I never had the chance to talk to him, since he was killed in 1992. I wanted to understand what my father did, and decided to embrace photography fully. His archive became my photography school and opened my mind to other people’s stories.

    About Verdiana S.

I am Verdiana, class 1992. After high school I started studying Biology at university as I had that Romantic dream of a wild life close to nature. I found myself locked in a lab most of the time, and I was sad. After more than one year of bacteria and micro-organisms I dropped out lab to give myself a chance following my real passion: Music and Sound, even though I had no idea where it would have brought me. I applied for the Sound Engineering and Music Production course at Saint Louis College of Music, in Rome. I have always been attracted by the chance of handle sounds and make art by physical and mathematical considerations. I found it also very intriguing to work closely with those fascinating and complex artistic characters. During my studies I had the chance to learn and explore the different fields of the audio professions: live concerts, recording studios, sound design, music production, mastering. I was the one dreaming of working in a big and important recording studio, being part of great and prestigious productions… and actually it happened! During my last year at university I became the studio assistant at Bloom Recording studio, one of the most important studios in Rome: huge productions, incredible outboard and analog gear, beautiful mixing and recording areas etc, I really enjoyed it… for a while… The only totally unexplored field for me was the “Audio-Video Post-Production”. It happened to be in my personal phone book, the number of Andrea Guerra, one of the most important Italian soundtrack’s composers. I called him (it took me an entire day to get the courage) and I told him I was intrigued and interested in the production and post-production process of film music. Without even realizing it, I found myself working as his personal Music Editor and assistant and receiving priceless lessons from his great experience. I was on TV shows, films and shorts and commercials. I used to be part of every process of creating a soundtrack: from the preproduction to its final mix. I felt that this was definitely what I loved. While working with Andrea, I have been writing my university final project about the complex relationship between Music and Pictures. I studied their synaesthesia applied to the aesthetics of cinema and to the functionality of advertising. I do strongly believe that who works with music and sound, especially if applied to images, should master and control every single aspect of these two powerful media, not just the technical one: culture, psychology, structures, methods, meanings etc. exercise a primary role to achieve the best possible result for a product of excellence. After my graduation I moved to Manchester where I have been working at Futureworks and had the chance to grow as a Sound Designer and Mixer engineer for motion picture. Currently I live between Rome and Manchester and freelancing

    About Giuseppe M.

Where business, branding, and storytelling intersect. Our slogan reflects two sectors for which we create content, Corporate Video and Television Programs. Our clients span across business sectors: technology, fashion, design to food, wine and hospitality. And we’ve produced non-fiction television content that has gone on to air internationally. That’s how I’d sum up Modio Media, the company I founded with my partner, Gia Marie Amella, in Chicago in 2006. I have various roles at Modio Media. I handle daily business that includes developing projects, making client presentations, overseeing freelance staff and creating budgets. On the production side, I alternate between sound recordist and cameraman. For more complex projects, I supervise hired freelancers through each production phase. In the studio, I edit audio and video, create simple 2-D animation, and produce original music and sound tracks. For editing, I use FCPX and Motion. Pro Tools and Izotope Music Production and Post Production Suite plug-ins are essential tools that I use to clean, equalize, master, and optimize tracks that conform to standard audio levels for television, digital, and radio.
