I am a journalist, writer and film-maker with experience working on three continents and in different media industries. I have a BA in Journalism from SS.Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Macedonia and MA in Screenwriting from California State University Northridge. I have worked as a journalist in TV, print and radio. My last full-time journalism job was for the BBC in Macedonia (radio). In Los Angeles I worked mainly as a script reader and development assistant in production companies. In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia I worked as a Writer/Editor in chief, and my duties involved editing of a business magazine and writing scripts for promotional videos and documentaries. I am currently freelancing as a journalist, writer, director and editor. I am interested in stories that have a social context and a people-dimension, also current affairs and politics but told through the perspective of ordinary people. Since I move around and travel a lot, I can do stories from different countries and in different languages.

I am a budding journalist at the American University in Bulgaria who takes interest in enterprise storytelling and documentary filmmaking. I enjoy dabbling in human interest stories and presenting them to the broad world in both written and video form. I have penned a 5,000-word feature on a Bulgarian Roma who has struggled to provide for her ever growing family amid a raging economic crisis in Eastern Europe. My immersion in the Roma community led to a short documentary on a lavish Roma wedding in a small Bulgarian town that explores the collision between centuries-old customs and modern lifestyle. The documentary was produced, directed, shot and edited in the span of a moth together with a college partner in the fall of 2014. I have also shot and edited for a longshort documentary that examines how Communism in Bulgaria molded the lives of two men with vastly disparate lifestyles and value systems.

About Hristo P.

Hello! My name is Hristo “Itso” Petkov and I am a film/video director, cinematographer and editor. My background includes working as a graphic and product designer as well as VFX specialist in Worldwide FX. There I was a 3D Lighting Artist, using software packages such as Maya, ZBrush, Nuke and Mari. I worked on Hollywood features, such as Expendables 2 and Killing Season. Over the last five years I co-owned a company, serving as its main director, editor and cinematogrpaher. Through my previous experience I have developed a full understanding of the overall pre-production, production and post-production process. I also have deep knowledge of color grading, as well as color and composition principles, as I have always found these important in my work. The software programs I use the most are Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop and Resolve. Moreover, I have worked with FCP and Avid on numerous occasions. I have made Internet and TV commercials, music videos and short films, and have received praise for my work at both film festivals and representatives of top brands, such as Microsoft, Samsung, Unicef, Nivea, Shell and Visa to name but a few. Apart from creating commercials, I have also made several short and mid-length films. The first of them – “1, 2, 3… Until You Find Me” was screened on the Quarantine Film Festival, where it won an award for visual excellency. My credits in this film include directing, screenwriting, editing and color-grading. The next film I was involved in, “Pigs Don’t Fly”, was screened on the Edinburgh Fringe – the biggest art festival in Europe. My credits in this film include co-directing, screenwriting, editing and color-grading. My most recent project – “A Common Connection”, was screened on the Sofia International Film Festival, as well as in Edinburgh and was extremely well accepted by both Bulgarian and British audience. My credits in this film include co-directing, screenwriting, editing and color-grading, and cinematography. I have also been a hobbyist photographer for more than seven years.
