Alex Pritz is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker based in New York City. Recently, Alex directed The Territory, which premiered at Sundance 2022 where it won both the Audience Award and a Special Jury Award for Documentary Craft. The Territory was shortlisted for the 2023 Academy Awards, nominated for three Critics Choice awards, a Gotham Award, a Producers Guild Award, and a record seven Cinema Eye Honors where it won for Best Debut Feature. The Territory was named a NYT Critics Pick, and was acquired by National Geographic Documentary Films for a theatrical release in the United States, Canada, the UK, Brazil, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The film is now available globally on Disney+. Alex won an Emmy for his work as a cinematographer on the feature documentary The First Wave (dir. Matt Heineman). He was also a cinematographer and field producer on Jon Kasbe’s feature documentary, When Lambs Become Lions (Tribeca 2018), and a co-director, cinematographer, and editor on the documentary short, My Dear Kyrgyzstan (Atlanta 2019). Alex is a co-founder of Documist, and has received grants from the Sundance Institute, IDA Enterprise Fund, Catapult Fund, Doc Society, and was named a 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough Fellow. Alex holds a B.Sc. (Ag. & Env.) from McGill University where he studied Environmental Science and Philosophy. In 2012, he received an inaugural Dalai Lama Fellowship for his work developing film curriculums alongside low-income communities in the Philippines. For more than a decade I have worked as a field producer and journalist covering stories in the U.S. and overseas, including the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Right now I am a freelance multimedia journalist/reporter based in New York City, but I am happy to travel for an assignment. My most recent long-term field assignment was on the campaign trail for U.S. Election 2020 to cover Joe Biden and his presidential victory. I also traveled during the height of COVID-19 last year to California and Ohio to conduct interviews for a production company in the health care space. As a freelance journalist, I have covered the United Nations for networks like Al Jazeera and i24NEWS. When massive protests broke out in Puerto Rico in 2019, I was one of the first mainland journalists to arrive on the island to cover the “forgotten Americans” amid a political crisis. I did live reports and was on-air for back-to-back coverage for i24NEWS and Cheddar News. I recently wrote an article for the Christian Science Monitor that looks at how racial groups are uniting in solidarity against anti-Asian hate crimes and what that means for social justice movements like #StopAsianHate and #BlackLivesMatter. I have also written for the Daily Dot on topics such as the Trump administration's attacks on Planned Parenthood; white privilege; and the role of social media in Puerto Rico's demonstrations.

The son of Jewish South American immigrants, he moved around a lot as a child, which helped him to develop a lifelong interest in documenting the lives of strangers and culturally ambiguous communities.
