Swarat Ghosh is an Indian photographer based in Kolkata.He is currently member of DiversifyPhoto Agency. His photography has been published in several national and international magazines, including but not limited to - The Washington Post, Burn Magazine, National Geographic Traveller, and International Street Photographer. His work has also been presented in Brussels, London, Paris, Glasgow, Istanbul, Thailand, Pondicherry, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Swarat is ex mentee of Agency VII’s mentorship program. Furthermore, he was nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass 2019, organized by World Press Photo. During that same year, he won awards under the “Series” categories of two major street photography festivals - the London Street Photography Festival and Brussels’s Street Photography Festival. In 2017, he was a finalist in “Lens Culture”, a street photography competition. In 2016, he won the prestigious “Neel Dongre Grants Awards for Excellence in Photography”, organized by the India Photo Archive Foundation. In 2018, his work, “Beyond Street”, was featured in a print exhibition for the Indian Photography Festival in Hyderabad, as well as an exhibition for North Carolina’s Eyes on Main Street Wilson Indoor Photo Festival. In 2017, his photographs were screened at the Odessa/Batumi Photo Days 2017 in Georgia, and the Photography Festival Maribor in Slovenia. I am a trained director & self-taught cameraman & editor, with more than two decades of experience in documentaries as well as fiction and a Masters degree in film-making from the prestigious Northern Film School in UK. My hour-long documentary "India's Frontier Railways - Maitree Express" not only earned a spectacular viewership on BBC but also got excellent reviews for its sensitive portrayal of the people of India and Bangladesh. After studying Linguistics and French language from University of Calcutta and Alliance Française. Documenting the intricate use of indigenous technique in the making of wooden bullock cart wheel, my passion to film this about to extinct craft form, has given birth to my first documentary film Probing a circular motion. Since then a couple of documentary films were made on indigenous practices and communities such as mask makers of tribal Chow dance, Gutipua dancers of Orisa, Indigenous practices of midwifery in tribal communities of India. And later a film on junior artists of Bollywood titled Extras, the identity of politics had been made to showcase another Bollywood away from glitz and glamour. Inspired and connected to the communities of our world motivates me to create each audiovisual work in search of a better world. Indigenous craft and artisanal practices,medicinal and health practices, Folklore along with pressing social issues are of utter importance for me.
