Visual storytelling is something I have always had a passion for. I have worked as a visual journalist full time since 2008. Prior to that I spent four years serving in the United States Marine Corps and have travelled all over the U.S. I enjoy human interest stories; especially profile pieces where you learn something about a person you may not have noticed otherwise. I've worked with Sony and Canon camcorders, Nikon and Canon DSLRs, studio and location lighting, audio gear including Sennheiser wireless mic systems. I have experience editing with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. I currently have basic knowledge of After Effects.

I've been shooting and editing video for the past eight years, but I've shot political and social-justice events stretching back to the '90s. Even got a few pieces to air on KCET, at the time the Los Angeles PBS affiliate, when I worked for CamNet the Camcorder Network. I continue to be most interested in issues involving social causes and political movements (LGBTQ+ issues, in particular). I have a portfolio site (linked below) where you can watch some of my work, and am armed with a Panasonic Lumix GH5, a Canon 1080 HD camcorder with both external and lav microphones, and a tripod. Tom Laffay is a visual journalist, DP and director specializing in working on long term projects in Latin America bringing a cinematic look with journalistic rigor. Currently based in Colombia, he has been dedicated to covering the ongoing violence against human rights defenders over the course of the country's troubled peace process since 2016 and frequently shoots for media like ARD Germany, El Espectador and contributes to The Atlantic and The Guardian. Tom is bilingual (English / Spanish) and travels extensively producing short documentary films for New Media Advocacy Project and IUCN in South America, Africa and the US and since 2011 he has worked with La Isla Network to advance improvements in the agricultural labor sector in Central America. Recently he has begun working as a DP on more narrative films for directors Sean Mattison, Emily Wright and Antonio Santini and is interested in pursuing that path. Tom lives in Bogota, Colombia and is available for assignments in the Americas and just about anywhere else.
