Hello friend! My name is Jason, and I wanted to tell you a little bit about who I am and how I got here. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where as a young kid, I earned the nickname, Creative Boy, due to my constant outflow of youthful creative energy. Whether it was performing for my family, building things out of toilet paper rolls, writing stories on the Word Processor, filming skits with my cousin, or learning how to use a computer, I was constantly pushing the limits of my creative mind. In 2003, I ended up in New York City, where I went to NYU Film School and earned my BFA. My college education set the foundation for a career in the arts and entertainment industry. And I’ve had an incredible career so far! I’ve traveled the world with my video camera in hand, from Beijing to Haiti, Bonnaroo to SXSW, and the Grammys to the Oscars. I’ve gotten the chance to talk to amazing people, film and edit inspiring stories, and make friends, all while staying true to my creative nature and drive! My passion is telling stories, and I’ve found that the best way for me to do that is through documentary filmmaking. Documentaries allow me to craft a story, and put the puzzle pieces into the right place. I can apply my skills as a musician as well, as music and rhythm are a huge part of any documentary project. I currently work between New York City and Boston. My interest in photojournalism stemmed from a recognition of my own—and America’s—ignorance of Islam and the Middle East in the wake of 9/11 and its wars. After studying photojournalism and philosophy, I moved to Cairo just before the start of the Arab Spring in 2011. For the next 9 years, I covered breaking news in Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Sudan, while also working on in-depth stories of religion, human rights, and cultural life in the region. One favorite project was co-founding Panorama with Mada Masr, a platform for showcasing the best photojournalism from Egypt and issues of interest to the greater Arab world. I was also a founding contributor to @EverydayMiddleEast. My work has been published widely, appearing in outlets such as National Geographic, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, Der Spiegel, and Le Monde Magazines. One of my long-term projects, “Modern Miracles,” which documents the physical imprint of the spiritual world, was the subject of a solo exhibition at Maqad Sultan Qaytbay in 2017.
