National Geographic traveled around the world to talk with 9-year-olds and ask what it's like to be growing up in 2016, and how gender affects their lives. In the far north of Scotland, an unusual conservation project is underway: the systematic removal of millions of trees. While tearing down forests is generally a bad thing, at the RSPB Forsinard Flows Nature Reserve it is essential to restoring one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. In this one area of Scotland, the peatlands store an estimated 400 million tons of CO2. When we think of a civil war, we often think of it as good versus bad. But in actuality, good and bad are blurred together as the fight morphs into one for survival. Photographer Marcus Bleasdale witnessed that first hand as he reported on the harrowing conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR)—a country nestled in the heart of the African Continent. Centuries-old Italian villages were becoming ghost towns. Refugees were fleeing conflict and seeking new homes. The needs of each have come together in Camini, a 12th-century town whose population has dwindled to about 280 people—a quarter of what it once was. In hope of breathing new life into deserted neighborhoods, Camini has welcomed more than 80 refugees and immigrants from around the world. In Uganda, widowed women can suffer a multitude of injustices: They can be forced out of their homes, robbed of everything they own, made to marry a brother-in-law, physically attacked or harmed—even their children can be taken away from them. This is the story of Betty Nanozi, one widow who is fighting to bring justice to her family.
