Based in Shanghai, I write in Dutch and English on (social) economic issues and developments in China and Hong Kong. I also make radio reports. I am a Dutch national. Before I moved to China to become a correspondent, I worked as a travelling reporter. I did stories on, for example, the new Panama Canal, the marijuana farming in Morocco and the financial and economic 'miracle' in Estonia. Before that, I worked at the foreign news desk of the Dutch national broadcaster. I lived in France an South Africa. I speak Dutch (obviously), English, French, German and a little Manderin.

For the Dutch magazine De Groene Amsterdammer I looked at the identity of the modern Chinese man. There are far more men than women. But while everyone talks about single women, he is the one being left over. How does he cope? Not so well.

The Chinese government built high speed railways throughout the whole country. Now even to the far west. They are keen on exporting their expertise. I traveled to Xinjiang province in order to find out how solid these trains actually are.
For the magazine of the Portuguese newspaper Expresso I went down to the stronghold of Occupy Hong Kong, where I had already been many times before in the late summer of 2014. I spoke with several young people (and one person a little less young) about their hopes, fears and demands. Photographer Egill Bjarki took pictures.
