Wouter Elsen studied journalism and international cooperation north-south in Belgium. He lived and worked in Senegal and moved to Burkina Faso in 2015. He has been working as a freelance video creator for UNHCR Burkina Faso, Vlaamse Radio & Televisie and as a photographer for European Pressphoto Agency. In Senegal, deforestation and rising temperatures have exacerbated the process of desertification, turning 150 square miles of forested area into deserts every year. Alimatou Badji leads a women’s collective to fight this problem one garden at a time. Watch as we follow her to remote villages, where she uses specific planting patterns to enrich the soil and stop the desert in its tracks.
This is the first project I made with a collegue, Arne Gillis. I went to Haïti and made a documentary about ' 5 years after the earthquake'. Instead of trying to look for the misery we searched positive stories, stories about people who are working for a better future.
