On day one, harvesters cut out these river reeds. And in 8 days, after drying, burning and filtering, the reeds will produce one of the most expensive salts in the world. Just one tablespoon of river reed salt costs about $1 in Kenya. Compare that to the 4 cents it costs locals for the same amount of sea salt. So how do producers make salt from river reeds? And why is it so expensive? Meet Jecinta, an agripreneur who is helping youth- and women-owned small agribusinesses with her start-up called Mama Mboga KE. She wants young girls to aspire to be farmers and fight the stigma of illiteracy and poverty which is associated with mama mbogas in Kenya. In Swahili, mama mboga means 'mother of vegetables' but in Kenya it refers to women vendors who retail farm-fresh vegetables from kiosks to consumers. Gender-based violence is on the rise amid the coronavirus pandemic. Lockdowns around the world means that many victims are trapped at home with their abusers. CGTN Africa has been taking a deeper look at the situation across the continent. The Miljacka river runs through Sarajevo, we went to Luka Sarajevo situated alongside it and devoured a $300 seafood feast. We go on a road trip to #Mostar and a fairytale sufi shrine and eat what many say is the best roasted lamb in the Balkans.
