The smell is the first thing that hits you on the banks of the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia. The odour is dense: rubbish rotting in hot sun mixed in with an acrid tone of chemical waste. Some 9 million people live in close contact with the river, where levels of faecal coliform bacteria are more than 5,000 times mandatory limits, according to the findings of the Asian Development Bank in 2013. Lead levels are more than 1,000 times the US Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standard and levels of other heavy metals such as aluminium, iron and manganese are above the international average.

ONCE known as the heaviest child in the world, Arya Permana, from Karawang, West Java, Indonesia is now an active teenager who likes to play badminton with his school friends. Arya weighed 423lbs (over 30 stone) at his heaviest and struggled to do simple activities like walk down the road to school or even take a bath. The 14-year-old lost an incredible 220lbs after having weight loss surgery. But while the teenager is now able to lead a much more active life, he has been left with excess skin on his chest, stomach, back and arms. The skin on his arms in particular left Arya embarrassed and he would try to cover it up with long shirts. It also meant when he did participate in sports the excess skin would rub and irritate him. The teenager underwent the first of at least four more planned surgeries at the Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung in July 2019, to reduce the excess skin on his arms. He hopes to return for further skin removal surgeries in the future – although with the COVID-19 pandemic it’s not confirmed when he will be able to have the subsequent surgeries. • Highlight on Harmful Impacts as a Result Power Plant of Jawa 9/10 to Local Communities

    • Documentary DP

Bank of China is involved in the 2,000 MW Jawa 9 and 10 coal-fired thermal power plant project in Suralaya area, Banten Indonesia. If built, Jawa 9 and 10 will add to the horrible degradation of environment quality and sustainable livelihoods in local Indonesian communities and will invite catastrophic climate change. There have been reports about the horrendous air pollution and the associated respiratory and skin diseases in the Banten province and surrounding area where Jawa 9 and 10 is located. Health impact modelling conducted by Greenpeace for Jawa 9 and 10 estimates it would cause over 4,700 premature deaths over its operating lifetime. These additional harms are unnecessary, given that Jawa 9 and 10 could be producing electricity that would go largely unused. Currently, Jawa-Bali grid excess capacity is 40%. Coal power plants harm climate and communities. Bank of China must stop financing coal power plant.
