Kyle G. Brown is a journalist who has reported, written and commentated for a number of media outlets, including the BBC, France Télévisions, France 24, CBC, The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star. Kyle did a series of reports for TV, radio and print on illegal, industrial fishing across African waters. He has unearthed stories of Mexican migrant workers lured to promising pastures in Canada only to find low pay, high rent and the economic misery they had tried to escape; street children in South Africa who are swept out of cities by the authorities and subjected to physical and sexual abuse; elderly Canadians whose adult children appropriate their assets and clean them out; a village of squatters in Denmark who have fought the government for decades to remain independent – in the middle of Copenhagen, and more.

For generations, Senegalese fishermen have been working the waters near the Mauritanian coast. But their neighbours recently adopted a more hard line policy. I travelled there to find that the Mauritanian coastguard had shot Senegalese fishermen - and admit to in this report. We meet the survivors of the wreck, and hear how one crew member never made it back alive.

Unable to police the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean which attract industrial fishers from all over the world, west African fisheries officials teamed up with Greenpeace to patrol their coasts, for several weeks. They discovered a Wild West, where precious stocks were being looted out of sight. I boarded the Greenpeace vessel as it plied the waters, and closed in on the culprits.

Former dictator Augusto Pinochet ordered not only the killing and "disappearance" of thousands of people during his reign in the 1970s and 80s. His forces scattered victims' remains, burying them throughout the country and making them almost impossible to find. Now, new technology is helping scientists examine DNA in the smallest of bone fragments, so that decades on, they're able to identify more of the missing.

Containing a wealth of fish and seafood, West Africa attracts industrial fishing vessels from all over the world. But they are often a law unto themselves, entering waters reserved for locals. And small fishermen venture further out for a dwindling supply of fish. The increasing traffic has led to a number of deadly collisions. I meet the survivors of crashes who have lost loved ones and crew.
France's creaking infrastructure is buckling under an ever-growing influx of migrants. In this report, I found a severe shortage of housing and emergency shelter for migrants. For those who secured a night or two in the few shelters not already full, the living conditions were so bad that migrants returned to the streets and parks where some have been camping for well over a year.
