Michael Davie is a Director, writer and cinematographer who has been chasing dramatic, real-life stories for more than 20 years, from the glaciers of Denali to the frontlines of the Balkans and the Middle East. Most recently, Michael co-created and served as Series Director on Oprah Winfrey’s BELIEF, a landmark television event The Atlantic called “an epic spiritual series” and “not to be missed.” As an Executive Producer for Harbers Studios in New York Michael oversaw production on a dozen documentaries investigating the impact of climate change in the developing world for RIPPLE EFFECT IMAGES. At National Geographic Television he created WORLD DIARIES a series which took viewers into some of the planet’s most dangerous places. Films included HONOR AMONG MEN and APARTHEID’S CHILDREN which featured Nelson Mandela. His feature documentary THE CHOIR, about music in a South African prison, was hailed as “soulful and rigorously tough” by Variety, and won the AFI Best Director Award. His films WAR CHILD and GORILLA MURDERS were both awarded Emmys for outstanding investigative journalism. For the film LIBERIA: AMERICAN DREAM? Michael and his team were awarded the prestigious Edward R Murrow and Columbia DuPont awards. Michael is comfortable tackling any manner of non-fiction film or television. This episode of the acclaimed National Geographic series HARD TIME goes inside one of the largest women's prison in the United States. For five weeks we followed characters in the prison's toughest units - including the mental health wing, the punishment unit and death row.
The Girls of Gashora is a short advocacy piece about Rwanda's top performing high schoolers. This is the first of three episodes about the students. The series follows the main characters from their school days through to their first year at some of the most prestigious universities in the US.
"Ghana" is an advocacy film which follows the story of Mama Esi, a Ghanaian woman forced to give her children up for adoption. Several of her children were then sold into slavery. The film profiles activist Lisa Lovett-Smith who is working to reform Ghana's adoption system.
"Gorilla Murders" investigates the killing of a family of endangered mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The film unearths a complex web of corruption and murder that leads to the conviction of the former head of Virunga National Park. The film was nominated for four Emmys and won the Emmy for Best Investigative Journalism.

Belief is a 7 x one hour series I co-created and served as a series director and writer. The series explores the power of belief by following intimate, personal stories of faith practitioners around the world. Belief is hosted by Oprah Winfrey and was filmed in 28 countries over three years. The series was completed in 2015.
