In the Peruvian Andes, "potato custodians" are preserving hundreds of varieties of this humble tuber.
Juan Leon, a Para-athlete who lost his legs in an accident and tried to get his life back on track by swimming, which brought him to compete in the Parapan American Games. This is a story about fighting back from adversity with the inspiration of a coach, who helped him realise his potential, but also giving back to his community.
Maria Fernanda Reyes (AKA: Mafer) spent much of her childhood on a beach where she taught herself to swim and eventually surf. Her talent with a surfboard got noticed by a local surfer, who became her coach, and with his guidance, Mafer instantly became Peru’s top female international longboarder. In 2019, Mafer got selected to compete in the Pan American Games 2019, and a favourite to win gold. This personal dream and shared by many, quickly disappeared after breaking her board in the first round. This story takes us through her turbulent journey, where we witness an unexpected end.
BRIEF: Create inspirational videos that focus on the corporate and human aspects of the major events for host cities, focusing on the individuals, community, and city. Helping potential Host Cities realise the long term sustainable benefits of hosting major events through Arup’s experience and expertise. RESPONSE: The brief was to create a series of films to satisfy the above brief, working from the initial creative concept, research & planning, field production & post-production, to the final delivery. Using the Lima 2019 Games as a case study, we wanted to create a concept that quickly communicated the grassroots and broader impact of large scale events to a global audience. Part of this challenge was to tell the stories of the different stakeholders including the host (Lima 2019) and the citizens of Peru, Arup (the client), and the Athletes themselves in both the Pan American and ParaPan American Games. The mission was to show how they worked together as a team to achieve their dream. Not only did we want to demonstrate the tangible impact but also, using fact and sporting metaphor. Illustrating the commitment and sacrifices made by these stakeholders to achieve something genuinely spectacular within an almost impossible timeframe was vital, but ultimately, how knowledge and experience can pass onto the next generation of pioneers: creating a legacy. It was this demonstration of human endeavour and the strength of the individual and collective character that inspired the campaign slogan “Committed to the Long Run”.
In this tense and immersive tour de force, audiences are taken directly into the line of fire between powerful, opposing Peruvian leaders who will stop at nothing to keep their respective goals intact. On the one side is President Alan Garcia, who, eager to enter the world stage, begins aggressively extracting oil, minerals, and gas from untouched indigenous Amazonian land. He is quickly met with fierce opposition from indigenous leader Alberto Pizango, whose impassioned speeches against Garcia’s destructive actions prove a powerful rallying cry to throngs of his supporters. When Garcia continues to ignore their pleas, a tense war of words erupts into deadly violence. Filmmakers Heidi Brandenburg and Mathew Orzel capture all angles of a volatile political and environmental crisis with breathtaking access and bold, unflinching camera work. From the raucous halls of justice to deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle, When Two Worlds Collide exposes a titanic clash between a president hungry for economic legitimacy and an outspoken environmentalist desperate to protect an ancient land from ruin.
