The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented educational disruption with 1.2 billion children and youth impacted by school closures. Yet, despite these challenges, there is hope. This documentary focuses on the power and agency of youth. It is developed under the framework of the long-term partnership between UNESCO's Global Citizenship and Peace Education and UNODC that bridges the justice and education sectors to guide young people towards building strong, just and democratic societies. Youth’s voices are in the forefront with sentiments echoed by world leaders, policy makers, justice actors and educators to deliver a compelling message on the power of youth to move the world.

Instead of a golden age of political integrity and economic prosperity, the last four decades since the end of the Cold War have brought the world to a dangerous juncture. People are experiencing rising inequality and powerlessness. They're wondering about the fate of their families, their communities, and the systems that move the world today. When you add climate change in, our moment in history starts to look a lot like science fiction. Cynicism, frustration, and desperation are rising in countries around the world often as a reaction to the perceived failure of democracy and globalization. If all these problems were intimately related, if they're all part of a single transformation occurring in power centres across the world, if there was something that people everywhere could do about it, then that would be an opportunity the global community could hardly afford to miss. To understand this possibility, you have to try on a change of perspective. And it all begins with corruption. This brand new short film from UNODC brings together UN experts and academics to look at how corruption has manifested itself throughout history, what the implications have been, and how we can work to counter this crime.

Sport has great potential to empower youth and help them find the right path in life! Don't you agree? The #LineUpLiveUp global initiative on youth crime prevention — launched under the UNODC Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration — uses sport to empower young people from marginalized communities and help them develop essential life skills that increase adaptive and positive behaviour addressing vulnerabilities that are linked to violence, crime and drug use. Involving local communities and working through youth and sport centres as well as schools, the youth crime prevention initiative actively engages youth as ambassadors for safe and healthy lifestyles and embeds sport and physical activity within the social fabric of groups and local communities.

Camila is only 17, but she's already faced many challenges in life and seen her friends die because of drug crimes. Two years ago, she discovered martial arts and found a way to change her future. From a rude street punk, she turned to a hard-working student with big plans in sport and in life. ‘Line Up, Live Up’ – an initiative which teaches life skills to at-risk youth under UNODC’s Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration – showcases the good practice of using sport to guide and empower young lives from unprivileged communities by developing essential skills that let them stay away from violence, crime and drug use. Following the steps of this global initiative, #ChooseSport is a series of one-minute short videos that profile youth across the world who have gone through a transformation with sports and the trainers who promote this approach. Each episode tells the story of either a coach/mentor/trainer or a young person who faced different circumstances and challenges, and whose life went into a new direction by learning about discipline, respect and teamwork from sports trainings. On this International Day of Non-Violence, support the #ChooseSport movement as it advocates for the power of sport to uplift lives and communities, and to build a more peaceful world. Thembaletu from Khayelitsha, Cape Town went through a dangerous phase in his life: as a kid from an unprivileged and vulnerable social group, he used to steal and was tough with others. One day everything changed – he discovered surfing and found a safe space to release negative emotions and heal himself. Now he works at the Waves for Change surfing school where he not only teaches young people surfing but also inspires them to become the change they want to see. ‘Line Up, Live Up’ – an initiative which teaches life skills to at-risk youth under UNODC’s Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration – showcases the good practice of using sport to guide and empower young lives from unprivileged communities by developing essential skills that let them stay away from violence, crime, and drug use.
