43 students missing. One big state operation to cover corruption, drug trafficking... and the role in the case of the Army of Mexico Attacks on journalists by Mexican drug cartels transformed Veracruz, traditionally a vibrant commercial and cultural center, into one of the most dangerous places in the world to report the news. Veracruz never was the epicenter of Mexico’s drug war, but violence in the beachfront city has surged since 2011. In the last year and a half, 11 journalists from the area have died covering the violence. Manuel Monroy, a young crime reporter, is one of the few journalists who remains on the frontline. Drug traffickers kidnap and murder a nephew and uncle, both of whom were journalists covering Mexico's drug war in Veracruz.
