About David

I currently work between New York City and Boston. My interest in photojournalism stemmed from a recognition of my own—and America’s—ignorance of Islam and the Middle East in the wake of 9/11 and its wars. After studying photojournalism and philosophy, I moved to Cairo just before the start of the Arab Spring in 2011. For the next 9 years, I covered breaking news in Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Sudan, while also working on in-depth stories of religion, human rights, and cultural life in the region. One favorite project was co-founding Panorama with Mada Masr, a platform for showcasing the best photojournalism from Egypt and issues of interest to the greater Arab world. I was also a founding contributor to @EverydayMiddleEast. My work has been published widely, appearing in outlets such as National Geographic, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, Der Spiegel, and Le Monde Magazines. One of my long-term projects, “Modern Miracles,” which documents the physical imprint of the spiritual world, was the subject of a solo exhibition at Maqad Sultan Qaytbay in 2017.

    • Corporate Videographer

When Peter Florence, Lucas Manuelli, Russ Tedrake needed a video of their research at MIT’s CSAIL lab they tapped me to create it. This video has been featured on MIT’s youtube channel and their home page. This was created as a one-man-band. I did all the video, audio, editing, and color correction.

  • Hurricane Henri

    • Editorial Photographer / Photojournalist

As Hurricane Henri approached New England the Washington Post put me on to cover it’s landfall. We had one photographer embedding with the Coast Guard on Cape Cod and another on Long Island.

  • An Aberrant Presence

    • Editorial Photographer / Photojournalist

In Boston, as in many other American cities during the Spring and Summer of 2020, military police were summoned in response to Black Lives Matter protests. Deployed in an American downtown, infrared cameras are again able to highlight the presence of the military, now marked foreign by its ersatz vegatal signature in a civilian concrete environment. This unnatural pink, alongside the ambiguous gazes of the police and soldiers who are the subjects of these photos, destabilize their presence, challenging viewers on both sides of a hardening cultural divide to consider these people from a different perspective.

  • Modern Miracles

    • Editorial Photographer / Photojournalist

While working on news stories in Egypt I heard other stories of miracles that intrigued me, so I started keeping a list. The list grew to about 50 miracles, interventions in the physical world, or blessed locations. Over about 6 years I tracked down these stories to their sources and made photographs along the way.
