Mario Alejandro Ariza Medium Agnostic Storyteller Mario Alejandro Ariza is a Dominican immigrant to the United States who grew up in Santo Domingo and Miami. He is currently a Michener Fellow in poetry at the University of Miami’s Master in Fine Arts program, and an editorial fellow at The New Tropic. He holds a Master’s degree in Hispanic Cultural Studies from Columbia University. His poetry can be found in Gulf Coast, The Raleigh Review, The Baffler, And the The Cincinnati Review. Hurricane Irma ravaged the lower keys. A police checkpoint at mile marker 74 stopped much needed aid from getting to survivors for 6 days after the storm. Locals and volunteers from across the country banded together to move goods army surplus trucks and old drug smuggling boats, and Lower Keys community members organized the distribution.

f you’ve lived in Miami for any length of time, you’ve almost certainly ordered something from a ventanita. Ventanita means little window in Spanish, and these portholes that dot the sides of restaurants across the city dish out hot Cuban coffee, crunchy pastries, crispy croquetas, and just about anything else that can be packaged up to-go at a Latin food joint.

Straining against the line attached to the hook in it’s mouth, the shark’s sword-shaped head, called a chephalophoil, rears out of the water. Alex Anstett, a 21-year-old undergrad, lies prone on a bobbing plastic platform attached to the back of the expedition’s boat. She lunges for the beast. “Somebody grab my legs!” she yells. This is shark tagging. It’s part science, and part extreme sport.
