Hamada Elrasam (b. 1987 inEgypt) is a Cairo-based freelance documentary photographer, photojournalist,and videographer who covers humanitarian stories with a critical and creative eye. From the painful legacies of the Egyptian revolution and the Rwandan genocide, to the frontline of Europe’s migration crisis on the Greek island of Lesvos, he has dedicated his practice to the advancement of social justice and human rights. Over the last eight years, Hamada’s work has been published by the AssociatedPress, Voice of America, GlobalPost, Agence France-Presse, Al-MasryAl-Youm, Los Angeles Review of Books, Le Monde diplomatique, ABC News, Mada Masr, Jacobin, Al-Monitor, Truthout, among others. His image of a protest clash in Cairo won the Egyptian Photojournalist Society’s 2012 Egypt PressPhoto Award. In 2015, the Associated Press published his project “Traces of the Conflict,” which he produced as part of the first cycle of the Arab Documentary Photography Program.

PHOTO GALLERY 30 Intact Sealed and Painted Coffins Unearthed in Egypt
An Egyptian archeology mission working on the west bank of the Nile has discovered 30 intact and sealed coffins of 22nd Dynasty priests and priestesses of Egypt's deities Amun and Khonsu. During the 10th century BC, almost 3000 years ago, tomb robbers were widespread in Egypt, stealing the funerary collections found in tombs and destroying coffins and mummies. Pharaonic priests would often hide coffins to protect them. Some of the coffins are fully painted with scenes from the book of the dead and the titles of the deceased, while others are partly painted, and a few are plain. The coffins will be restored before being transported to the Grand Egyptian Museum for display in a special hall.

Egypt's Djoser Pyramid Reopens After Restoration
Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly and other officials were on hand this week as the Djoser Pyramid was reopened following its restoration. The Saqqara necropolis, with its antiquities and tombs dating to the most ancient periods of Egyptian history, is an open-air museum. The necropolis also includes the Serpeum, where the Apis Bulls were buried.
