The landscape of Almería, Andalusia, has the highest concentration of greenhouses in the world. They produce more than half of Europe’s demand for fruit and vegetables. The production from slave-like work of African immigrants in greenhouses created an economic boom for the previously poor Almería. These migrants work for poverty wages in temperatures exceeding 40ºC.

Every day 7,000 Moroccan women cross the border carrying goods from Melilla to Morocco. Their packages can weigh up to 80 kg. They have no contracts, access to social security services, or healthcare. There are no basic facilities such as toilets, shade, or drinking water. The women in particular are exposed to police violence, both verbal and physical.

The Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla represent Europe’s southernmost border. There is no formal customs agreement between these cities and Morocco, giving rise to a system where goods are smuggled across the border as personal luggage to avoid customs charges and taxes. The burden of this work falls on the “cargo women”, who carry huge bales of goods back and forth over the border.

Kenyan authorities and the EU are now negotiating the resumption of a controversial forest conservation project suspended in 2018 due to serious human rights concerns. The Sengwer, one of Kenya’s marginalised minorities, face eviction from their ancestral land. Despite a moratorium on evictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and huge pressure from human rights groups, 28 houses were burnt in July 2020 alone. The EU’s final decision is to be taken on the 20th of September and the Sengwer are now calling for international solidarity. A Novara Doc by Gosia Juszczak, produced with the Minority Rights Group.
