About Brady

Brady Lawrence is a Seattle-based director of photography and documentary filmmaker specializing in work about outdoor adventure, music, technology and the environment. His films and photos have been featured in outlets like Nat Geo Travel, TIME Magazine and The Bikepacking Journal. Projects for clients such as the Schmidt Ocean Institute, Zillow and Canyon Bicycles have taken him from the northernmost road in Alaska to the high plateaus of Kyrgyzstan and many places in between. Whether it’s working with mountain bikers in the backcountry or lighting the latest tech in the studio, Brady brings a deep focus on characters to his storytelling and a cinematic eye to his videography. His first feature documentary, Into the Rift, tells the story of a grueling bike race in the remote Atlas Mountains of Morocco and was selected for 'Best Event Documentation' in the Bikepacking 2020 Awards. From adventure athletes and activists to start ups and songwriters, Brady loves captivating stories about compelling people and is always excited by the chance to collaborate with other passionate folks.

Brady was very easy to work with and adaptable, willing to pick me up early for our shoot and roll with the punches on a high-pressure time-restricted shoot where we couldn't scout the location ahead of time. He set up a three-camera shoot with professional lighting in a matter of minutes and took direction well for the unplanned scenes. He also operated a Ronin with great skill, getting all the angles we needed for b-roll in a short amount of time.

  • You Can't Do It Alone — Lea Davison at Unbound Gravel

    • Documentary DP

You can’t be what you can’t see. Growing up, cyclist Lea Davison didn’t have any queer role models to look up to. As her mountain biking career propelled her to the Olympics and world championships, she feared that coming out, and being her whole self on trail, would lose her sponsors and jeopardize her career. But with the support of friends, family and her loving wife, Lea ultimately proved to herself and the next generation of cyclists that you don’t have to choose between who you love and the sport you love. Following Lea and her dedicated support crew as she tackles the infamous 200-mile Unbound Gravel Race, “You Can’t Do It Alone” tells the story of an athlete and her team building queer community with every race.

To simply finish the Atlas Mountain Race means navigating 1,200 kilometres of the most rugged and remote roads in Morocco. To win requires riding almost non-stop, night and day, for days on end. It is a combination of strength and sleep deprivation that only a few riders in the world can manage. Alone, unsupported and loaded down with supplies, each competitor must constantly battle mechanicals, heat exhaustion and saddle sores to get to the finish. There is no prize, no money, simply the satisfaction that comes from pushing oneself to the limit while exploring the forgotten corners of a beautiful country. With support from PEdALED, Canyon, Fizik and the race crew led by organiser and route creator Nelson Trees, filmmaker Brady Lawrence followed the race documenting everything from a brutal 80 kilometre walk through the high desert with a broken bike, to one racer’s simple joy at realising they’ll soon eat their first warm meal in days. Featuring the sport’s biggest names and first-time, ultra-distance racers alike, the film gets up close to the kind of people crazy enough to take on this epic challenge. Capturing the human drama set against an otherworldly landscape, Into the Rift is an in-depth look at a true cycling adventure.
