Shruti Kulkarni is an independent documentary filmmaker-photographer and a published poet & artist. She has worked with organizations in the sectors of development, sustainability, education, arts & culture and environment & conservation. Her projects have ranged from producing documentaries, awareness films, photography, book trailers, writing photo essays, articles, creating artworks and developing content for websites, newsletters & social media. Her films & photos have focused on socio-development themes, issues of farmers living on the fringes of Sundarban mangroves, tsunami rehabilitation, post-disaster reconstruction, livelihoods of coastal communities, climate change, sustainable living and architecture, farming, human-wildlife conflict & dynamite fishing. Her clientele includes World Bank, GFDRR, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Arc Finance.
Beeja operates as an eco retreat and holistic learning centre in Hampi, Karnataka (South India). This project intends to revolutionize the way we see every area of our life and claim a lifestyle that aims to be harmonic. Beeja is an evolutionary project, meaning one that continues to evolve over time dependent on the individuals who come to add their wisdom and talents.
Farmers living on the fringes of Sundarban, the largest mangrove forest in the world, are facing serious threats from climate change events like rising sea levels and erratic weather. Footage for this video was shot in October 2021, at a time when most villagers in the area had already lost their crop twice since the beginning of the season due to excessive rainfall and were trying their luck to grow rice for the third time before the window of opportunity closed for the year. Most farmers in the area are able to farm only once in a year during the monsoon season. Failure to grow any crop during an year usually results in distress migration by some family members to distant parts of India, like Tamil Nadu, Kerala or Andamans. As part of the RICE (Resilience | Innovation | Culture | Empowerment) initiative, a few farmers from Kalitala Panchayat are sharing their stories and songs about farming, the rice varieties they grow and stories of their own resilience. It is an effort to virtually connect with allies who can join in their efforts to make farming in the area more climate risk resilient and explore how the tasty chemical free desi rice varieties grown by the villagers can be made available to consumers at affordable prices.
