About Ashlyn
My name is Ashlyn Tubbs and I am a video journalist who works in the South Plains of Texas. While I have seven years of background in writing, photography and videography for two different newspapers, my true passion came about when I began to write, shoot, edit and present my own stories for broadcast at KCBD NewsChannel 11. My favorite stories are more in-depth special assignments to attract viewers during our ratings period, and that is why I am pursuing mainly documentary style storytelling.

Tom McCoy did not have toys as a child growing up during the Depression, and one day he claims an angel gave him a handmade toy that made a huge impression on him. He knew that in his retirement years he wanted to make toys to give away to children. But he also uses his woodworking skills to swoon his wife, and even help her medically. I made this into the ultimate Valentines Day story.

This was a sweeps story that I pursued after seeing a video of Abby's first steps after her accident posted to Facebook. I met up with her several times after that to mic her up and interview her, to show her life lessons learned after she did not wear her seatbelt and how she uses those experiences to teach her students not to do what she did.

This man from Crosbyton, Texas, actually painted record covers onto billboards in Los Angeles in his younger years. They would throw them away after a few months, so he would save them and now has them in the back of his museum. So when James Taylor came to perform in Lubbock, he had a goal to get his portrait of the artist autographed. My story aired beforehand and made that venture successful.

This man from Abernathy, Texas, has always has had a passion for John Deere tractors. During KCBD NewsChannel 11's Live Community Coverage Tour, I followed him around to hear how his collection started, and how it involves tractors and collectables of all sizes. The story aired remotely from our broadcast in Abernathy.

Alex Ortiz is from Kress, Texas, and even though he grew up far from an ice rink, he knew he wanted to be a speed skater for the Olympics one day. So he began to improvise and eventually made it to training. My story is not about his accomplishments in the rink, but how he realistically made it to the Rio Olympics in 2016. I followed him around his hometown as he explained his story.
