In 2019, Gambia Rising began working with a team of three Gambian teachers to create a structure for their school. The school had been established but, at the time, they didn't have a proper structure to hold classes. I had the privilege of visiting this school on three separate occasions: once in August, when they were still building the new structure, in September, when classes had begun but materials were still lacking, and in October, when they had desks and various other materials needed for teaching. I captured moments from each of my visits to show the process, the work, and the care that was put into the creation of this school. The work that Gambia Rising is doing has an incredible impact. With conflicting emotions about the Peace Corps, evacuated volunteer and filmmaker Harry Dwinell sits down with seven former volunteers to discuss critiques of the organization that have existed for decades. By combining these interviews with satirically used Peace Corps advertisements, this film attempts to dismantle the organization’s curated “single story.”
