Nikola Macura transforms Serbia’s old weapons of war into musical instruments for his project, “From Noise To Sound”. His work includes a cello created from a bazooka and a gas bucket, and a guitar from a rifle and an army helmet. Jasenko Đorđević of Tuzla, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, transforms average pencils into meticulously carved detailed sculptures. Using surgical scalpels and a microscope, he spends up to two days at a time creating spaceships, trains, and mountainscapes. Polina Verbyts’ka from Kiev, Ukraine uses polymer clay to make her fleshy jewelry. Believing that art does not need to be beautiful to have importance, Verbyts’ka creates unconventionally inspired items such as finger earrings, eyeball necklaces, and distorted face sculptures. Mejra Djogaz's two sons, Omer and Munib, were murdered in the Srebrenica massacre in 1995 during the Bosnian War. She also lost a third son and her husband during the conflict. Ahead of the final appeal verdict of Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, who was sentenced to life in prison for his role in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the Srebrenica genocide, Djogaz said he should never walk free. Dozens of international migrants in Bosnia-Herzegovina have taken to bathing in natural thermal spring waters to keep clean. They say the water at the spring in the town of Ilidza, near Sarajevo, is warmer than in the nearby Blazuj camp where they have been living. The temporary reception center is under Bosnian jurisdiction but managed by the International Organization for Migration. International human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have criticized the Bosnian authorities for providing inadequate shelter this winter for thousands of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. They are trying to reach nearby Croatia and the European Union.
