Following the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse, members of the KKK descended on the state capital.
"According to photographer Sean Rayford, it's been an exhausting summer for the people in the state of S.C. A racially motivated massacre at a historic black church, heated debates in the legislative bodies and the removal of the Confederate flag from the statehouse. And in S.C., there's nothing that connects the people with one another more than college football and these southerners needed...

Shortly after pallbearers had carried the body of South Carolina State Senator Rev. Clementa Pinckney back into Emanuel AME Church on Thursday evening, where he and eight others were murdered last week, the Sons of Allen - Men of Ministry filed through the crowd. They were singing: "When Jesus comes, oh the trumpet will sound loud..."
The photo editor reached out to me about this story and I was able to suggest this local event to serve as the visual component.
