In her hometown of Aleppo, Syria, Loury was a budding musical prodigy. But these days, Loury’s fingers know only the stitch of a cheap T-shirt. Since age 11, when government shelling drove her family from their home, Loury has worked a series of low-wage and illegal jobs in Istanbul. (I filmed and edited the piece.) Once a year, dozens of Peruvian mountain towns capture condors and tie them to the backs of bulls for a bullfight in an event known as Yawar Fiesta. The centuries-old practice, linked to the Andean culture in some cases kills or maims the giant birds, which are endangered in Peru. Now, Peruvian legislators are trying to reduce the impact on the condor without infringing on tradition. Convicted of kidnapping, Alejandro Nuñez del Arco brings together more than one thousand inmates to practice “Full Body” aerobics in the courtyard of one of Peru’s most notorious prisons. With armed guards peering from above, Nuñez del Arco attempts to break the world record for the most people simultaneously performing the exercise, whether inside a jail or not.

About Elie
I am a photojournalist, filmmaker, and grad student in global development with a passion for exploring social and environmental issues. I've partnered with the Fuller Project for International Reporting to document Syrian teenage girls living in Turkey, produced web docs for Al Jazeera, and frequently collaborate with humanitarian organizations to tell intimate, character-driven stories to show the impact of their work. I am currently editing my first documentary about the loss of tradition and identity in a small Peruvian town. The funding came from a Kickstarter campaign and the film is expected to be released in late 2018. I previously worked as a staff photographer and multimedia editor at the St Louis Post-Dispatch. While in St. Louis I edited several multimedia projects and trained the photo staff in multimedia storytelling and editing. Reporting for Duty earned national recognition, including a regional Emmy award. While in St. Louis, I also taught courses in multimedia production and photojournalism.
