About Duncan

I'm Duncan Moore, a visual journalist based between Spain and Kenya. Currently producing visual and written content for organizations and publications such as the UN, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, BBC, Great Big Story, Deutsche Welle, Bloomberg and more. Some highlights from my work include tracking locust swarms in Northern Kenya, documenting traditional Luhya bull fighting, searching for vintage taxis in Ethiopia and photographing illegal gold-miners in Kakamega. In my free time I like to play rugby, start conversations with strangers and eat copious amounts of street food. Work samples available at:

Meet Harrison Mumia, the president of Atheists in Kenya Society. He hopes to create a platform for non-religious people in a country where a majority of the population has a religious upbringing. “Let people believe what they want to believe, let your personal opinion be yours,” says Mumia. But his drive to build an atheist community hasn't been easy as non-believers in the country face prejudice, fear and discrimination. While they hold the government to account on issues of morality, and support gay rights, the main objective is simple: Promote the acceptance of atheists in Kenya. "We want Kenyans to accept that we are part of them. And we are normal," he says.

  • Fighting a locust plague amid Covid-19 in east Africa

    • Documentary DP

The recent coronavirus pandemic is only exacerbating the problems currently facing herders, also known as pastoralists, in Kenya. They’ve seen their livestock devastated and crops destroyed after the worst locust invasions in 70 years and villagers are bracing themselves for another swarm, 400 times larger if left unchecked. With less vegetation for grazing, herders can sometimes infringe on neighbours land, causing violent conflict. We follow Josephine Ekiru, a peace-builder, who is trying to help as economic insecurity caused by the pandemic fuels attacks.

  • The coronavirus murals trying to keep Kenya's slums safe - The Guardian

    • Fixer

A street artist called Msale has taken it upon himself to create giant murals bringing public health messages on Coronavirus directly to the overcrowded Mathare slum in Nairobi. With half a million people living in such 'a squeezed area' social distancing is quite impossible to achieve, says Msale, so he is providing information for people on how to keep safe in the 'simplest, clearest' way he knows.
