The NonAligned collective is a diverse group of filmmakers, photographers and journalists with roots in five continents and experience working in dozens of countries. Through photography, video, virtual reality and radio, NonAligned works in all mediums to bring back unexpected stories from far flung parts of the world.
This week’s Op-Doc is Roopa Gogineni’s “The Rebel Puppeteers of Sudan.” Filmed in that country’s remote Nuba Mountains, the film tells the story of a resourceful group of journalists and a drama collective who banded together to create “Bisha TV,” a satirical web series that mocks the cruelty of Sudan’s repressive leadership.

In 2011, an international peacekeeping force pushed al Shabaab Islamists from Somalia's capital city. The fight continues in the countryside and in Mogadishu. The weakened extremists launch periodic suicide bombs and IED attacks. For a generation, the lives of young Somalis have been obscured by the violence. Today, the fragile peace in Mogadishu allows youth to imagine a future beyond war.
