The Cold Climate Housing Research Center in Fairbanks, Alaska focuses on exactly what their name suggests: how to build efficient and sustainable housing in cold climates. They have pioneered ways to build on thawing permafrost and on ways to efficiently ventilate and heat housing in -70F weather. The Alaska Air National Guard conducts search and rescue operations across Alaska. For this video, I was invited on a training run in an AC-130J as they flew across the Alaska wilderness. A juvenile humpback whale died in Turnagain Arm near Girdwood, Alaska. It washed ashore close to the Seward Highway. Because of the accessibility, scientists were able to dissect the whale to determine the cause of death, and members of Alaska Native communities were able to harvest the blubber. The whale is part of a string of whales that have been washing ashore in Alaska. The Pretty Rocks Landslide is threatening to take out the Denali Highway, the only road through Denali National Park. The landslide is at an extremely difficult part of the road to fix, Polychrome Pass. Polychrome Pass is steep and incredibly windy. These employees of Denali National Park work every day to solve the problem. This was the second video I produced at Alaska Public Media. The goal of Ballot Measure One was to increase regulations in projects ranging from home development to the Pebble Mine to protect salmon habitat. One side called themselves Stand for Salmon, the other side, Stand for Alaska. Ballot Measure One ultimately failed.

About Joey
I film and produce videos from start to finish on topics ranging from ballot initiatives to dog mushing races. My expertise is in adventure videography. I've hiked mountains to film splitboarders, mushed for 60 miles with a team training for the Iditarod, and spent a weekend filming packrafters. I have a masters degree in journalism from the top-ranked Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, and a bachelors degree in journalism from Boston University. I've worked at the award winning documentary company SideXSide Studios while simultaneously completing a digital video fellowship with PBS NewsHour. I have a passion for photography and videography, especially with environmental subjects.
