Starving, and running out of energy, they are forced to wander into human settlements for any source of food. Feeding polar bears is illegal. Without finding another source of food, this bear likely only had a few more hours to live.

To show the decrease in glacier size, scientists from the USGS Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center photograph the same areas where glaciers were photographed in the early 1900s.

Once a frequent sight on the Wyoming plains, the Wyoming toad had nearly become extinct after a sharp decrease in population in the late 1970s. Habitat loss, climate change, and a fungus are all factors in its decline. The species was listed as endangered in 1984, and declared extinct in the wild not long after. But efforts to raise the animal animals in captivity have been successful.

How do you move a mountain goat nearly a hundred miles? With a helicopter. Mountain goats were introduced to Utah in the late 1960s, and since the initial release of six goats, their population has increased to more than 2,000. When a group gets too large for its range, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources captures and moves some of the goats to other populations throughout the state.

Syria plunged into a brutal civil war in 2011. It left many victims, including animals that were abandoned as the fighting intensified. Out of about 300 animals that lived in Magic World zoo—on the outskirts of Aleppo—only 13 remained after six years of war. Four Paws, an international animal welfare group, launched a plan to rescue them from the war zone, take them to Turkey, and then to sanctuaries in Jordan.
