About Jessica

Creative filmmaker with extensive experience in film production, journalism, non-profit communications, and healthcare reporting. Award-winning and multilingual writer, producer, director, and editor. I am skilled in cinematography, video editing, directing, producing, and scriptwriting. I work well as both a one-person filmmaker/cinematographer as well as part of a crew. I was most recently the creative lead at the American Institutes for Research, a non-profit that works on education, health, international development, and other social issues. In that role, I managed visual creative work and was involved in all aspects of video from pre-production planning to interviewing, filming, and editing for almost eight years. I previously worked as a web reporter at Kaiser Health News, where I covered health care issues for KHN and their partners including The Washington Post, NPR, MSNBC and McClatchy. I also have extensive international experience including in Latin America, Europe, and West Africa. I am finishing up a MFA in film at American University (expected 2020) and also hold a MS from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

These Combined Sewer Overflows release pollutants like fecal coliform bacteria and e. coli into the waterway sickening animals, fish, and humans, and depleting the oxygen levels causing harmful algal blooms. “After the Storm: Pollution in the Potomac” investigates the all-too-common problem of wastewater overflows, and reveals a remarkable network of underground tunnels being constructed below the nation’s capital to try to stem the toxic tide that threatens the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.
