In the Ecuadorian Amazon, a group of 10 indigenous Kichwa midwives fights to practice and maintain their ancestral medicinal traditions despite daily challenges with discrimination, misogyny and lack of government or monetary support. Their association, called AMUPAKIN, or Association of Kichwa Midwives of the Upper Napo, remains devoted to passing on their ancestral traditions.

Nearly 70% of the Ecuadorian Amazon has been leased to oil companies, much of which is territory inhabited by nine indigenous nationalities. The most recent oil auction by the government is set to include the territory of 18 roadless Waorani communities. In order to fight this decision, the Waorani developed a high-tech mapping project. They have mapped 180,000 hectares with 10,000 GPS points.

In the Amazon, transportation can mean life or death. The Achuar live days into the Amazon by motor-powered canoes, but if the motor breaks or is stolen, they have no way to travel. Gas is expensive and requires a relationship with petroleum companies destroying the jungle. In collaboration with 9 indigenous communities, Kara Solar built a solar canoe that will be given to these communities 4/23.

As the city prepares for the Olympics with new stadiums, roads and bridges, the favelas are also preparing for the influx of tourism. Tours popped up in 2013, but have been gathering steam after recent government support. Some criticize it as “safari tourism,” which merely exoticizes poverty. Other praise the idea for helping tourists see that favela residents are just normal, working people.
